THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia lost 1-0 to the Hagerstown Suns on Wednesday in game one of a doubleheader, despite having three pitchers combine for the second no-hitter in franchise history. Jake Burnette walked two and hit one in the first inning and was relieved by Jose Regalado, who walked the first batter he saw with the bases loaded to give the Suns the only run of the game. Regalado followed by retiring the next 16 batters. Eric Dorsch worked a perfect seventh to cap off the no-hitter. The Power offense, however, was limited to four hits, scattered over four different innings. Austen Williams garnered the win, Burnette took the loss and R.C. Orlan notched the Suns save.
NO-NO HISTORY: The combined no-hitter was the second in West Virginia Power franchise history. Hunter Strickland and Diego Moreno combined to no-hit the Charleston RiverDogs on July 27, 2009, shortly after Strickland was acquired from the Boston Red Sox. The last time a South Atlantic League team lost a game despite its pitching staff working a no-hitter was on June 27, 2004, when Rome no-hit Capital City and still lost.
LEGEN- WAIT FOR IT- DARY: West Virginia and Lexington renew their rivalry for the first time this season with a four game series. The Power have played the Legends more than any other team since the start of the 2005 season and have beaten Lexington 98 times over 193 meetings. The clubs will play eight times this month and meet again eight times near the end of the season.
TO BE CONTINUED: The second game of Wednesday's Power and Suns doubleheader was suspended in the second inning due to inclement weather and will be resumed later during the season's first half. West Virginia does not host Hagerstown again during the first half of the year, so the game will be resumed at Municipal Stadium either later this month or during the Power's mid-May trip to Maryland. It will resume with the Suns up 1-0 and the Power batting with a runner on first and one out in the home half of the second. Trace Tam Sing had a 3-1 count when the action was halted.
SMALL MARGIN OF ERROR: The Power lost once last season by a 1-0 final, falling 1-0 at Kannapolis on April 29 as part of a twinbill.
HEAVY WORKLOAD: West Virginia's bullpen has seen a lot of action early on in 2015. Of the 53 innings West Virginia has played, the bullpen has tossed 32.2 innings. Despite the increased workload, the bullpen has fared well, posting a 2.76 earned run average over the first six games of the 2015 season.
REGALADO PROMOTED: The Pittsburgh Pirates made a roster move that impacts the West Virginia Power roster. RHP Jose Regalado joined the Power from Extended Spring Training and has been added to West Virginia bullpen. Regalado made his South Atlantic League debut in Wednesday's doubleheader opener.
POWER PROMO UPDATE- APRIL 25: The West Virginia Power will honor the 1990 Charleston Wheelers, the only team to bring a South Atlantic League title to Charleston. The entire team will be inducted onto the Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame and the first 1,000 fans will receive a commemorative t-shirt celebrating the 25th anniversary of the championship.
POWER POINTS: The Pirates have transferred infielder Erik Forgione to the short-season West Virginia Black Bears. Forgione appeared in one game during the opening homestand of the season... Tito Polo's hitting streak has reached five consecutive games after the outfielder went 1-2 on Wednesday morning...
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: The Pirates were shutout for the second straight night, falling 1-0 to Detroit at PNC Park...Indianapolis was held to three hits in a 2-1 loss against Louisville... Altoona blanked Richmond on the road 3-0 with Angel Sanchez earning the win... Bradenton was felled 6-5 in a walk-off loss at Dunedin. Jordan Steranka tied the game with a solo home run in the ninth.
ON THE AIR: West Virginia Power games can be heard on Charleston's ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, online at wvpower.com and on the TuneIn Radio App. Adam Marco will call the action once again and will be joined by Mike Baggerman when the team plays at Appalachian Power Park.
