(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Chase Simpson's eighth-inning home run tied the game and a triple by Pablo Reyes drove home the go-ahead run as the West Virginia Power came from behind to beat the Lexington Legends 4-2 Thursday night in front of a crowd of 5,074 in the Legends 2015 home opener.
The Power took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Michael Suchy singled with one out and moved to second on a walk to Tito Polo. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Suchy scored on an infield single by Elvis Escobar.
The Legends tied the game in the fourth. Wander Franco doubled with one out and advanced to third on an error by Polo, the center fielder. Franco came home on a single by Brandon Downes.
Corey Toups' leadoff homer in the fifth inning put the Legends in front 2-1.
That lead lasted until Simpson started the eighth with a drive over the wall in right center field. With one out, Cole Tucker walked and moved to second on an errant pickoff attempt by Legends reliever Nik Stephenson. Reyes then lined a triple into the gap in right center, and Tucker scored to put West Virginia ahead 3-2.
The Power added an insurance run in the ninth on a walk to Suchy, a sacrifice, a passed ball, and a base hit by Jerrick Suiter.
Junior Lopez (1-0), who relieved starter Alex McRae at the start of the sixth inning, pitched two innings and got the win. Sam Street worked the final two innings for his first save.
Stephenson (0-2) was the losing pitcher. He pitched the final four innings after starter Emilio Ogando worked the first five.
The Legends and Power meet again Friday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
