THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia held off Kannapolis 8-6 on Wednesday afternoon. The Power trailed 4-3 after one and 5-4 after four before tying the game in the fifth and going ahead in the sixth. Stetson Allie put the team up 6-5 with a fielder's choice and Erie Wood reached on an error that allowed D.J. Crumlich to score for a 7-5 edge. Brent Tanner hit a solo home run in the seventh for the Intimidators, but the Power plated a run in the top of the ninth on a single by Ashley Ponce to provide insurance for the win. Clay Holmes struck out five over four innings but did not factor in the decision. Pat Ludwig pitched four innings for the victory and Kyle Haynes worked a scoreless ninth for the save.
SWEEPING SUCCESS: The Power won all three games in Kannapolis, outscoring the Intimidators 28 to 11 along the way. It marks the second series sweep this season by West Virginia, having won all four in a set against Greenville earlier this month. With three wins, the Power moved two games over .500 for the first time this season. The last time West Virginia was two games over .500 overall was July 2, 2011.
BLUE PERIOD: West Virginia opens its' season series against Lakewood tonight. The Power and BlueClaws will play 24 times over the remainder of the season (25% of the rest of the schedule), including a total of eight games during the first half. West Virginia won the 2012 series 13-6, but trails 54-58 in the all-time series. The Power are two games under .500 at home in the all-time set (32-43) and two games under at FirstEnergy Park (22-24), where the series resumes next weekend.
NINE TO A DIME: Walker Gourley's hitting streak reached 10 games with a ninth inning single on Wednesday. The utility man is batting .342 during his last ten games with one home run and five runs batted in. Gourley has reached on one hit in nine of the ten games and had a four hit day on May 15 at Hickory. The streak matches Raul Fortunato's early April run as the longest by a Power player this season.
TWO TIMES THREE: On Tuesday, Stetson Allie hit two home runs in a single game for the third time this season. The infielder now has 12 total, tied for second most in the league, and after only 46 games, is six behind Willy Garcia's team high during the entire 2012 season. Allie also hit two home runs on April 13 at Ashville and April 29 at Savannah. The infielder is on a seven game hitting streak, batting .448 with four home runs and runs batted in dating back to May 17.
ROSTER REINFORCEMENT: Josh Smith was promoted back to the Power roster onWednesday. The southpaw has appeared in 12 games this season for West Virginia, going 1-1 with a 7.71 ERA. Smith was transferred to the Jamestown Jammers roster on May 16 when Clay Holmes was activated from the Disabled List. To make room for Smith, Pittsburgh transferred Orlando Castro to Jamestown. Castro leads the team in wins and ERA, but should be promoted back to the roster in time for a start against Lakewood this weekend.
PROMO UPDATE- REDNECK NIGHT: The award-winning Redneck Night is back on Saturday, May 25. The event will feature an appearance by Duck Dynasty's Mountain Man and the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a duck call. The 2012 version of this promotion was named as the best theme night in Minor League Baseball.
POWER POINTS: Stetson Allie and Josh Bell are one and two atop the South Atlantic League in runs batted in, with the former moving into the top spot during Tuesday's game at Kannapolis. Allie brought home eight runs during the series against the Intimidators (now at 40 total) while Bell drove in two (37 total)... . AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh beat Chicago 1-0. Garrett Jones singled in Andrew McCutchen in the first inning for the game's only run. Francisco Liriano pitched seven scoreless for his third win... Indianapolis was idle Wednesday and plays at Buffalo tonight... Altoona lost 7-5 to Reading on a walk-off three run homer by Anthony Hewitt... Bradenton upended Tampa 12-4. Alen Hanson and Gregory Polanco had four hits each and combined to score six of the 12 runs.
