Asheville Tourists News Release

Asheville, NC--The last time the Rome Braves took the field in Asheville prior to Thursday was a night Rome Braves fans still remember vividly. In the 2012 South Atlantic League Southern Division Championship series rubber match, the Asheville Tourists defeated the Braves 4-3 to earn a trip to the SAL Championship. Thursday night, the 2013 Braves obtained a little bit of solace.

The visitors controlled the contest from start to finish and ended up with a 6-1 series opening victory in front of over 3,000 fans at McCormick Field. Rome's starting pitcher Patrick Scoggin, who had a perfect game interrupted by weather his last start verses the Tourists, earned the win. Scoggin tossed six innings and surrendered just one run; a two-out RBI single by Jason Stolz in the second.

Tourists' starter Shane Broyles worked in and out of trouble most of the evening. The Braves plated two runs in the first, one more in the second, added another in the fourth, and capped their scoring with a two-run Homer in the sixth.

Alving Mejias and Michael Mason combined to pitch 4.2 innings of shutout baseball in relief for Asheville, but the offense never generated enough life for a comeback bid. Francisco Sosa paced the Tourists at the plate by going 2-for-4 and Max White collected two base hits in his Tourists debut.

Asheville and Rome will square off for Game Two on Friday night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
