
Suns Shutout Legends 7-0 to Open Series

HAGERSTOWN, M.D. - The Hagerstown Suns (27-16) recorded their seventh shutout of the season as they downed the Lexington Legends (24-23) 7-0 Thursday evening at Municipal Stadium. The win improved Hagerstown's home record to 12-8 on the season.
Hagerstown got things going in the bottom of the first when 2B Tony Renda hit a double to lead off the inning. He later scored on another double, this time by LF Wander Ramos to make it 1-0 Suns. The RBI was Ramos' 23rd of the season.
The Suns extended their lead to 2-0 in the third inning when 1B Shawn Pleffner's single to right field scored SS Stephen Perez. Pleffner's single would be his only hit of the night.
Hagerstown tacked on another run in the fourth inning. Right fielder Brandon Miller doubled to lead off the frame and advanced to third on a throwing error by Legends LF Terrance Gore. The very next batter DH Estarlin Martinez hit a sacrifice fly to center field which scored Miller to make it 3-0 Suns.
The Suns added one more run in the fifth thanks to RF Brandon Miller's RBI groundout to shortstop. Miller went 2-4 on the night with a double and a run scored along with the RBI.
Three more runs came across for Hagerstown in the eighth inning. Center fielder Will Piwnica-Worms' single to right field brought home LF Wes Schill to make it 5-0 Suns. After catcher Pedro Severino popped out and SS Stephen Perez singled, 2B Tony Renda singled to right, driving in Martinez and Worms to set the final score at 7-0.
RHP Ivan Pineyro (4-2) got the win for the Suns. Pineyro went 7 innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out six. LHP Daniel Stumpf (3-2) took the loss for the Legends. Stumpf worked 5 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four.
The Suns continue will continue their series against the Lexington Legends on Friday, May 24. RHP Pedro Encarnacion (3-3) will start for Hagerstown, making his ninth start of season. Lexington will counter with RHP Aroni Nina (1-2), who is making his eighth start of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
