Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk got an outstanding effort from Mike Wright and a clutch effort from the bullpen in a 1-0 win over the Gwinnett Braves Monday night at Harbor Park.
Wright (2-0) allowed just five hits without walking a batter over six strong innings, the second consecutive start in which the 25-year-old has tossed six shutout frames. The East Carolina product faced just three batters over the minimum, striking out three while throwing 62 of his 82 pitches for strikes. Wright's ERA now stands at 1.72 (3 ER, 15.2 IP) over his first three starts of the season.
Steve Johnson followed Wright's effort by striking out three over 1.2 shutout innings of relief before giving way to Cesar Cabral, who recorded the final four outs to earn his first save of the season. Johnson now has 13 strikeouts and two walks over 7.0 innings of relief this year.
Gwinnett starter Mike Foltynewicz (0-2) was the tough-luck loser as he allowed just three hits in picking up the complete game loss. Foltynewicz, the #2 prospect in the Atlanta system, walked one and struck out nine while throwing 72 of his 105 pitches for strikes.
Norfolk plated the only run of the contest in the second frame, as Christian Walker opened the inning with a walk before moving to second base on a single by Steve Clevenger. Two outs later Michael Almanzar lofted a single to right field, plating Walker and giving the Tides the early lead.
The shutout victory was Norfolk's second this season, and the Tides (8-4) now own a 2.73 team ERA through the first 12 games of the season.
The two clubs continue their four-game series Tuesday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 6:35 pm. In a battle of left-handers, T.J. McFarland (0-1, 5.87) gets the start for Norfolk against Manny Banuelos (0-0, 2.08).
Notes: Foltynewicz was the second pitcher in as many days to pick up a complete game, 8.0-inning loss against Norfolk, following Sunday's effort by Durham starter Dylan Floro...The game was played in two hours and seven minutes...Norfolk turned three double plays in the contest...Chris Parmelee doubled in the sixth inning and is now hitting .340 on the season...Paul Janish stole second base in the eighth inning, making Norfolk 12-for-13 on stolen base attempts this season.
