International League Players of the Week

April 20, 2015 - International League (IL1) News Release

The International League announced today that Charlotte second baseman Carlos Sanchez and Rochester pitcher Pat Dean have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from April 13-19. Each player is the first from his respective team to claim a weekly award this season. Dean was previously honored as the IL Pitcher of the Week in 2013 (Aug. 5-11) after making his first two starts as a Triple-A pitcher with Rochester.

CARLOS SANCHEZ, Charlotte Knights IL BATTER OF THE WEEK

Carlos Sanchez has hit safely in all seven games he's appeared in with Charlotte since being optioned from the White Sox. In his six games this week, Sanchez comfortably paced the International League with fifteen hits, and so far this season he is the IL's top hitter with a .485 average. Led by Sanchez, the Knights averaged six runs a game over the past week, topping out with eight runs in what was their only loss of the week to Durham. Sanchez collected multiple hits five times, including in each of the last three games against Gwinnett prior to Sunday's postponement.

22-year-old Carlos Sanchez is in his seventh season as a professional player. He was signed by the White Sox as an international free agent in 2009. He first reached the Triple-A level with Charlotte in 2012, and last season he made his Major League debut with Chicago, hitting .250 in 28 games. He appeared in one big league game this season before being optioned, going 2-3 on April 8 at Kansas City. Sanchez is a native of Maracay, Venezuela.

PAT DEAN, Rochester Red Wings IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

This week left-hander Pat Dean made his first two starts at the Triple-A level since 2013. He combined to toss 12.0 innings of one-run, six-hit baseball while accumulating an IL-best fifteen strikeouts along the way. Dean defeated the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Tuesday, holding the Yankees top affiliate to one run on four hits and two walks in 6.0 innings. He struck out eight in the 3-1 Red Wings triumph. Dean returned to the hill Sunday afternoon in Pawtucket where he held the defending Governors' Cup champions to just two hits in 6.0 scoreless innings. Rochester's bullpen gave up four runs over the next two frames, costing Dean his second straight victory in the 4-3 loss to the PawSox. In eight career starts as a Triple-A pitcher, Dean is 4-2 with a 1.73 ERA.

25-year-old Pat Dean is in his sixth season as a professional pitcher. He was Minnesota's 3rd round pick in 2010 out of Boston College. He spent the entire 2014 season with Double-A New Britain, posting an 8-9 record with a 4.81 ERA. Dean is a native of Waterbury, Connecticut.
