LEOMINSTER - A standout pitching performance from Wachusett Dirt Dawgs starter Steve Colella (UMass Dartmouth / Leominster) shut down the Worcester Bravehearts' offense and gave Wachusett a 3-run victory on Thursday night, July 9 on Doyle Field in Leominster.

Colella improved to 3-2, as he gave up three hits and struck out three in seven shutout innings on the hill.

Wachusett took a 1-0 lead into the 6th inning when right fielder Chris Chiaradio (Seton Hall / Teaneck, New Jersey) hit a solo home run to double the lead. Wachusett extended the lead again in the 7th with RBI singles from second baseman Justin Brock (Franklin Pierce / Latham, New York) and catcher Alex Lefevre (UConn / Mansfield Center, Connecticut).

Bravehearts starter Jacob Stevens limited Wachusett's offense but fell to 0-2 despite striking out eight and allowing only two runs (one earned) on six hits in 5.1 innings of work.

After going eight innings without a run, the Bravehearts threatened in the top of the 9th inning, as they had runners on the corners with one out. First baseman Zack Tower (UMass Lowell / Auburn) hit an RBI single to score center fielder Ian Strom (UMass Lowell / Hopedale). With two on and down by three, left fielder Logan Brown (Slippery Rock / Leechburg, Pennsylvania) grounded into a double play to end the game.

Dirt Dawgs pitcher Ben Brown (Hartford / Middlebury, Connecticut) got the final two outs in the 9th inning and collected the save.

The Bravehearts play the final game of a three-game road stand against the Pittsfield Suns at 7 p.m. Friday, July 10 at Wahconah Park in Pittsfield.
