Lancaster Stormers News Release
Mike Woods launched a grand slam, his first homer of the season, in the bottom of the eighth to break a 4-4 tie, and the Barnstormers held off a last ditch rally by Camden to hold onto a 9-7 victory Tuesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Lance Burkhart led off the eighth with a single off Mike Flannery (1-2), and the right-hander gave Lancaster a second runner, walking Danny Gonzalez. Buddy Hernandez, who had not been scored upon all season, was summoned by Camden skipper Joe Ferguson. He induced a pop up on a bunt try for the first out of the inning. Jarred Ball followed with a single to right, loading the bases for Woods. The Barnstormers left fielder took a 1-1 offering from Hernandez over the wall in right field for his first Barnstormers grand slam and an 8-4 lead. One out later, Brian Stavisky crushed his third home run of the season over the picnic tents in right for a five-run cushion.
Gary Cates beat out an infield single with one out in the ninth to get the Riversharks started on a valiant comeback effort. Brett Bonvechio hit a ground ball to second which Lloyd Turned bobbled while trying to feed Gonzalez for a force play. Josh Rabe followed with a double to left off Ryan Cullen (2-1), cutting the lead to 9-5. Cullen picked up a second out when L.J. Biernbaum grounded to Turner on a close play at first. Richard Lewis singled to left center to drive in the third run of the inning for a 9-7 lead.
Ricardo Gomez took over for Cullen and fell behind, 3-1, against catcher Erick San Pedro before recovering and striking him out looking to nail down the win.
Lancaster grabbed a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Stavisky's infield dribbler drove in the first run. Ian Bladergroen crunched a two-run double to right center for a 3-0 lead, and Danny Gonzalez made it 4-0 with a single inside the third base bag.
Starter Tim McClaskey carried a shutout into the sixth but left with runners at first and second and one out. Biernbaum greeted lefty reliever Pat Cassa with a double into the right field corner, and Lewis singled to center to slice the lead to 4-2. Ron Davenport tripled to right center with two outs to tie the game before Robert Averette got Gabe Suarez on a fly ball to center to end the inning.
