Ducks Trounce Patriots 8-1

Bridgewater, NJ - The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 8-1 at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Tuesday afternoon.

The Ducks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an in the park home run by third baseman Damien Rolls (1) after an outfield collision by left fielder Michael Ryan and center fielder Jeff Duncan.

Long Island scored four runs in the top of the second inning. Shortstop Dennis Donovan doubled, catcher Robert Sandora walked, and center fielder Jamal Strong drew a walk to load the bases. Second baseman Ray Navarette followed with an RBI single to plate Donovan and Sandora scored on an RBI groundout by Rolls. Right fielder Kevin Haverbusch drove in two with a double to increase the lead to 5-0.

The Ducks added another run in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by Navarette (2) for a 6-0 advantage.

Long Island extended the lead with two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Donovan doubled and would score on a sacrifice fly by Strong. Navarette then hit his second home run of the game (3) to make the score 8-0.

Somerset got on the board with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Left fielder Matt Hagen walked and scored on an RBI double by designated hitter Josh Pressley.

Ducks starter Manny Ulloa (1-0) picked up a complete game win, allowing an earned run on five hits and nine strikeouts in nine innings. Patriots starter Steve Kelly (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs on eight hits and six walks in four innings pitched.

The 2008 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford will continue at home on Wednesday evening with a 7:05 pm game against the Long Island Ducks.
