Fayetteville Woodpeckers News Release
Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (2-1) pitching staff struck out 17 Fredericksburg Nationals (2-2) on Tuesday night, but still had to buckle down in the ninth inning to secure a 3-2 victory in the series opener at Segra Stadium. Nolan DeVos and Trey Dombroski combined for 16 of the punchouts, while Ian Foggo locked down the game with the save.
Fayetteville scored in the bottom of the third inning and did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the night. Rolando Espinosa led off with a double and scored on a Zach Cole double into right field for a 1-0 advantage.
In the fourth inning, Leosdany Molina reached on a two-out walk facing Riley Cornelio (L, 0-1), advanced to third on a Dauri Lorenzo single, and sprinted home on a wild pitch to push ahead 2-0.
DeVos used the run support to his advantage and cruised through four hitless innings. The Davidson College product struck out five of the first seven hitters he faced and finished with nine strikeouts in his season debut. Dombroski picked up in the fifth and quickly retired the side in order to begin his professional baseball debut. The lefty carried the no-hit bid into the sixth inning and struck out a pair before surrendering an RBI triple to Daylen Lile that cut the game to 2-1.
The Woodpeckers grabbed a much-needed insurance run in the seventh, as Espinosa connected for his second double of the night to drive home Dauri Lorenzo for a 3-1 cushion.
Dombroski (W, 1-0) continued to work into the ninth inning, striking out a total of seven hitters, but was pulled after surrendering a solo home run to Brady House that inched the lead to 3-2. Foggo entered with the responsibility of grabbing the final two outs and nearly surrendered the lead on a line drive hit by Elijah Green. The ball was bobbled in center field, thrown wildly into left field, and shagged down by Leosdany Molina who delivered a throw to the plate in time to get Greene attempting to circle the bases.
Foggo (SV, 1) locked up the game in the next at-bat, striking out Maxwell Romero Jr. to secure the Woodpeckers second win of the season.
The six-game series will continues on Wednesday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM.
