Down East Wood Ducks News Release
Kinston, N.C. - With the bases loaded and one out in the ninth inning, Ryan Dorow ripped a 3-0 fastball over the head of the center fielder Cole Billingsley, scoring two, and lifting the Woodies to a 3-2 victory over Frederick, Friday.
The walk-off win for the Wood Ducks (43-18) is their second straight against the Keys (28-31), and fourth overall this season. They are also now 6-1 in extra-inning contests.
The Wood Ducks went ahead in the first inning against David Lebron. Leody Taveras singled with one out and then Dorow followed with a walk. Diosbel Arias was next, and he lined a single into left field to score Taveras and put the Woodies ahead, 1-0. Taveras extended his on-base streak to 19 consecutive games.
Lebron went five innings, allowing just the one run on three hits, he walked two and struck out six, and did not factor in the decision.
Sal Mendez provided the Woodies with another strong start. He scattered eight hits over seven innings, allowing just one run. He walked one and struck out three.
The lone walk and lone run came in the eighth, when he faced on batter and issued a free pass to Billingsley. Scott Engler then entered in relief and gave up a RBI single to Jomar Reyes that scored Billingsley who had moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a groundout. It tied the score, 1-1.
The Wood Ducks had runners at first and second with no outs in the ninth but were unable to convert against Blaine Knight (loss, 0-2), sending the ballgame into extra innings.
In the tenth Hasuan Viera was the inherited runner at second base, and Eric Jenkins was hit by a pitch. Yonny Hernandez then bunted both into scoring position, and then Taveras was walked intentionally to load the bases. That set up Dorow for the game-winner, his second walk-off hit of the season.
Knight worked 4.1 innings allowing two runs (one earned), on two hits, he walked two and struck out one.
Game three of the four game series is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday, as the Wood Ducks send lefty Jake Latz (4-1, 2.29) to the hill to face off with Fredrick righty Brenan Hanifee (4-4, 4.87). Farm Appreciation Weekend continues as the Woodies will again play as the Kinston Collard Greens. They will also host a farmers market at Grainger Stadium from 4-7 p.m. and the first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a Collard Greens bucket hat presented by Boiler Room Oyster Bar. The broadcast will begin at 5:50 p.m. on 960AM The Bull and online at 960thebull.com as well as on the MiLB First Pitch and TuneIn Radio Apps.
