Frederick Keys News Release
KINSTON, NC - Ryan Dorow hit a two-run single in the bottom of the 10th to give the Down East Wood Ducks (43-18) their second straight walk-off win over the Frederick Keys (28-31) on Friday night at Grainger Stadium. Winning the game 3-2, the Wood Ducks handed the Keys their fifth loss in-a-row. To go with this, the Keys are now 9.5 games behind the first place Wilmington Blue Rocks with 10 left to play in the first half following a Blue Rocks win over Fayetteville.
With the game tied at one after nine innings, the Keys took their first lead of the series in the 10th. Stuart Levy started the inning as the runner at second, moved to third on a sac-bunt by Cole Billingsley, and scored on a soft single to right by Willy Yahn off Cole Uvila.
Blaine Knight, making his first professional relief appearance, came out for his fifth inning of work in the 10th. With Down East starting with a runner at second, Knight (0-2) jumped ahead of Eric Jenkins 1-2, but plunked Jenkins with the next pitch. A sac-bunt by Yonny Hernandez then moved the tying run to third and the winning run to second. After Leody Taveras was intentionally walked, Knight fell behind to Dorow 3-0, before the Wood Ducks three-hole batter singled over Billingsley's head in center.
Held off the board since the seventh inning of game one, the Keys tied up the contest in the eighth. After Billingsley walked, he moved to second on a wild pitch and then to third on a groundout. That sent up Jomar Reyes, who hit an RBI single to right.
David Lebron worked the first five innings, giving up only one run in five innings. His lone blemish came in the first. With Taveras at second Diosbel Arias singled to left. In a no-decision, Lebron allowed only three hits, walked two and struck out six.
Lebron's counterpart, Sal Mendez, was even better. Tossing seven innings, Mendez allowed eight hits and one run he walked three and struck out six.
Uvila (2-2) got the win for the Wood Ducks, allowed one unearned run in the 10th. Knight suffered the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits in 4.1 innings. He walked two and struck out one.
The Keys and Wood Ducks play game three of the four-game series on Saturday night. Right-hander Brenan Hanifee (4-4, 4.87) starts for Frederick against Down East left-hander Jake Latz (4-1, 2.29). First pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and the broadcast can be heard on frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn radio app.
