Lancaster Stormers News Release
A former Auburn ace and Alabama slugger teamed up to lead the York Revolution to a 6-2 victory over the York Revolution early Sunday evening at Santander Stadium.
Bryan Woodall fired six shutout innings in the Lancaster win, getting help from Kent Matthes who homered and doubled in his Atlantic League debut.
Woodall (2-4) scattered five singles over his six-inning stint while walking none and striking out eight. At no time did the York Revolution have more than one runner on base against Woodall, and two of the singles were erased by Juan Apodaca gunning down would-be base thievers.
The eight strikeouts matched Woodall's personal, and the team's, best for the season and boosted the right-hander into the league lead with 69 on the season.
Lancaster grabbed a 1-0 lead off Rommie Lewis (5-7) in the fifth on an unearned run. Luke Hughes worked out a long walk to start the inning. Anderson Feliz bunted up the first base line. Catcher Salvador Paniagua tried to underhand to first but scooped the throw over the head of Telvin Nash, allowing Feliz to reach and Hughes to take third. Juan Apodaca pushed the run over with a force play grounder.
Matthes leadoff homer over the 37-foot wall in left in the sixth lifted Lancaster to a 2-0 lead, but it was in the seventh inning where the Barnstormers took control. Hughes again led off with a walk and went to third on Feliz' double into the right field corner. Apodaca stung a two-strike pitch into right for an RBI single and a 3-0 lead. Yusuke Kajimoto also singled to right to tack on another run.
After Zach Collier lined to deep right, Josh Judy replaced Lewis. Matthes greeted him with a line drive off the fence in left center, scoring Apodaca. Kajimoto also came home when center fielder James Simmons was guilty of a bobble.
The Barnstormers were one strike from a shutout when Nick Ferdinand reached Scott Patterson for a two-run homer, his seventh. Both runs were unearned as the game was kept alive by a dropped third strike.
Lancaster returns home to take on the Long Island Ducks on Monday evening. Play will resume in the suspended game from May 18 at 6:00 with the score tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning. A full nine-inning game will follow. Ian Marshall (3-4), who started the suspended game will pitch the regular game for the Ducks. The Barnstormers will counter with Bryan Morgado (0-4).
Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, starting at the first pitch.
NOTES: Pete Andrelczyk struck out a batter for the 17th consecutive appearance...Woodall has thrown five consecutive quality starts and nine overall...Left-handed pitcher Nate Reed has been purchased by the Mexican League and is headed to Cancun...Lancaster beat Lewis for the first time in five tries this season.
