Late Rally Secures Sweep for Southern Maryland

Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release


(Sugar Land, TX. July 12, 2015) ---Behind 3-0 heading into the top of the ninth, Southern Maryland put up a four spot in the ninth to defeat the Sugar Land Skeeters by the final of 4-3.

Sugar Land scored first in the bottom of the second on a Johan Limonta single to score Travis Scott to make it 1-0 Skeeters. In the bottom of the seventh, the Skeeters scored two runs. Chris Wallace led the rally off with a single, followed by a Johan Limonta intentional walk, and a Patrick Palmeiro single to load the bases. Former Blue Crab Renny Osuna reached first on an error by Zach Wilson to score Wallace to make it 2-0. The next hitter Amadeo Zazueta hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Limonta to make it 3-0.

Down to their final three outs in the top of the ninth, the Blue Crabs came to bat. Daryle Ward led things off with a single to centerfield. Grant Zawadzki came into to pinch run for Ward, and the next hitter Gustavo Molina singled to put runners at first and second. Anthony Vega came on to pinch run for Molina. Jake Opitz was next up, and he lined a double to right center to score Zawadzki. Jovan Rosa roped a single to left to score Vega to make it 3-2. After Andrew Johnston came on to pitch out of the Skeeters bullpen, Jamar Walton singled to right to score Opitz to tie the game at 3-3. Two batters later with runners at the corners, Casey Stevenson drive a fly ball to center to score Jovan Rosa with the sacrifice fly to give the Blue Crabs the 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Renny Osuna led off the inning with a single, but closer Erik Hamren retired the next three hitters to give the Blue Crabs the 4-3 victory. Southern Maryland banged out ten hits, and now have 61 hits the last five games combined. Wade Korpi picked up the win out of the bullpen, going 1.1 innings, allowing two hits.

Coming off their fifth sweep of the season, Southern Maryland continues with their seven game road trip taking on the Bridgeport Bluefish tomorrow at 7:05 P.M.
