WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - John Parke spun a quality start in his BB&T Ballpark debut, but the Wood Ducks used a six-run eighth inning to beat the Dash 7-1 on Saturday night.
Parke and Down East (7-10, 42-45) starter Sal Mendez matched each other with zeros until the sixth inning. Parke, who had allowed just four baserunners entering the sixth inning, allowed a leadoff infield single to Leody Taveras. Two batters later, Chuck Leblanc lined a double into right-center field to plate Taveras to give the Wood Ducks a 1-0 lead.
The Dash left-hander went six innings, allowing just one run on four hits, striking out three and walking three in a no decision.
Mendez limited the Winston-Salem (11-5, 52-34) offense to just four hits - all singles - across his first five innings of work, but the Dash tied the game in the sixth.
After Laz Rivera singled to open the bottom of the sixth inning, Blake Rutherford worked a 12-pitch walk to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Then, Yermin Mercedes drew a walk to load the bases for Gavin Sheets. Following a pitching change, Sheets hit a bloop single into shallow right field to bring in Rivera as the tying run. But, reliever Michael Matuella (3-5) was able to strand the bases loaded with a flyout, strikeout and fielder's choice groundout.
The Wood Ducks took command of the game in the eighth inning, scoring six runs on six hits against Cameron Seitzer (0-1). With runners on second and third and two outs, Brendon Davis came in to score on a wild pitch to give Down East a 2-1 lead. Then, Ricky Valencia stroked an RBI single into right field to make it a 3-1 game.
Eric Jenkins kept the line moving, lining an RBI single down the right-field line to plate another Down East run. Josh Altmann capped the Wood Ducks barrage with a three-run homer to left-field - his 17th home run of the season and third of the series - to put the Woodies in front for good.
In the loss, Mitch Roman tied a season-high with three hits, going 3-for-4 with three singles.
Winston-Salem wraps up its five-game series with Down East on Sunday when Dash right-hander Luis Martinez (5-4, 4.12 ERA) faces Wood Ducks right-hander Robby Rowland (1-1, 7.00 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 1:45 p.m., and fans can catch all of the action at wsdash.com/broadcast, MiLB.tv and the TuneIn Radio App. Fans can also watch locally on My48 (WXLV).
Sunday's game is a Rayados Day, where Winston-Salem will wear its Latin American jerseys as part of Minor League Baseball's "Copa de la Diversión" initiative. The series finale is also a Lowes Foods Family Sunday, where kids 12 and under will receive a free bag of popcorn.
