BANKS GUIDES DASH TO 4-2 VICTORY
Behind eight strong innings from Tanner Banks, the Dash topped Down East 4-2 on Friday night at BB&T Ballpark. Banks lasted eight innings and allowed two runs on nine hits to record his 10th quality start. Down East struck in the top of the first inning when Franklin Rollin lined a solo home run off of Banks over the left-center field fence to give the Wood Ducks a 1-0 lead. But, Winston-Salem promptly tied the game on a solo homer from Luis Gonzalez, who led off the bottom of the first. The Dash took the lead in the sixth via RBI singles from Micker Adolfo and Ti'Quan Forbes. Winston-Salem added its final run in the seventh, and Connor Walsh locked down the save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
DUCK HUNTER
Forbes, who played with the Wood Ducks in 2017, has shined against his former team this year. In 13 games against Down East, the 21-year-old is batting .333 (17-for-51) with three homers, a double, a triple and 12 RBIs. During this current homestand, Forbes is 8-for-12 against the Woodies. Forbes was traded from the Rangers to the White Sox on August 31, 2017, in exchange for right-hander Miguel Gonzalez.
NUMBERS NEVER LIE
Thanks to their strong second-half start, Dash are atop the Carolina League in several offensive categories, including runs (438), hits (776), RBIs (412) and slugging percentage (.427). Here's a look at some of the hottest performers for Winston-Salem in the second half:
OF Micker Adolfo: .340 AVG (17-for-50) with four homers and 14 RBIs
INF Laz Rivera: .317 AVG (19-for-60) with 15 runs, seven doubles, three homers and nine RBIs
OF Blake Rutherford: .311 AVG (14-for-45) with three doubles, two homers and 12 RBIs (played on Friday after leaving Wednesday's game with a left knee injury)
INF Gavin Sheets: .385 AVG (25-for-65) with two homers and nine RBIs; carried a 15-game hitting streak (snapped on Monday)
LOCKED IN LUIS
Since earning a promotion from Low-A Kannapolis to begin the second half of the season, outfielder Luis Gonzalez has been on a tear. The former third-round pick out of the University of New Mexico is batting .370 (20-for-54) with 11 runs scored, eight doubles, a homer and six RBIs. Gonzalez has recorded seven multi-hit games in his 12 games with Winston-Salem, including a career-best 4-for-5 performance on June 30 at Wilmington.
A SECOND-HALF START TO REMEMBER
At 11-4, Winston-Salem is off to its best second-half start in the Dash era (2009-present). During this stretch, Winston-Salem has outscored its opponents 102-63. The Dash have posted four double-digit scoring efforts over their first 15 games in the second-half, including a franchise-best 19 runs on June 25 at Nymeo Field against the Frederick Keys.
PARKE IT LIKE IT'S HOT
Left-hander John Parke will make his third career start the High-A level on Saturday. Through two starts, the southpaw has been solid, going 1-1 with a 3.27 ERA. A 21st-round pick out of the University of South Carolina, Parke was 7-4 with a 2.82 ERA in 14 starts for Low-A Kannapolis. A native of Greenville, S.C., Parke was one of three pitchers in the South Atlantic League to throw two complete games. In 29 appearances with the Gamecocks, Parke went 4-1 with a 5.68 ERA. DASH DOTS
Winston-Salem is the lone team in the Carolina League to reach the 50-win plateau...Thanks to his recent efforts at the plate, Forbes now sits eighth in the league in batting average with a .293 mark...Rutherford is tied for ninth in the circuit with a .292 average...On the mound, the Dash are third in the league in ERA with a 3.53 mark...Walsh's save last night marked the first for the right-hander at the High-A level since August 4, 2016, when the former Bearcat picked up one against Frederick.
