Down East Wood Ducks News Release
KINSTON, NC - In a modified doubleheader, the Wood Ducks split the final two contests with the Buies Creek Astros for the season and dropped the series two games to one. Thursday's action began by resuming the rain-interrupted middle game of the series for the final three innings.
The Wood Ducks (15-32, 50-67) used an odd double play to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh in the resumed contest and hang on for a 4-3 win. With runners on the corners and one out, Anderson Tejeda hit a ground ball to first where Seth Beer fielded the ball and stepped on the bag.
He then tried to turn to by throwing to second, but LeDarious Clark stopped and retreated back to first, giving enough time for Leody Taveras to cross home and score. Clark was subsequently tagged out in a brief rundown but Taveras had already hit the plate to score. So while it was an inning-ending double play, because Beer eliminated the force out, Taveras could score before the final out was recorded.
Sal Mendez worked all three innings of the resumed contest and only needed 31 pitches to do so. He struck out a pair and five of his outs were ground ball outs as well. The performance marked his second win of the season.
GAME TWO
Buies Creek (28-18) dominated the second game with a 5-0 victory - pitching their league-leading 18th shutout of the season.
Down East only managed four hits in the loss from four different hitters. Brendon Davis marked his third straight game with a hit and the bottom third of the order went a combined 3-for-9 with a walk.
Royce Bolinger also set a new career-high as a pitcher with three innings of shutout relief starting in the sixth. He struck out four batters for a new season-high with the Wood Ducks.
Matijevic tallied two RBIs with a homer and a double while Arauz hit a two-run homer to lead the offense and claim the series.
Down East hits the road for the final three games of the season with the Lynchburg Hillcats starting on Friday. Rollie Lacy will start for the DEWDs opposite of lefty Tanner Tully starting at 6:30 at City Stadium.
