'Wolves Take Down Squirrels 3-1

The SeaWolves went into Richmond on Tuesday night and took down the Flying Squirrels 3-1 in the first ever meeting between the two clubs at the Diamond. The win puts the SeaWolves a season-high six games over .500.

The Flying Squirrels struck first in the bottom of the third inning against Erie starter Andy Oliver. Thomas Neal singled with one out and stole second. Neal would score on a Connor Gillaspie base knock to center making it 1-0 Richmond.

The SeaWolves tied the game in the top of the fifth. With one out, Justin Henry doubled down the right field line. With two outs, Wilkin Ramirez walked putting two on for Cesar Nicolas. Nicolas sent a bouncer up the middle, scoring Henry, tying the game at 1-1.

The ‘Wolves would then take the lead in the top of the seventh against reliever Wilmin Rodriguez. Henry led off with a single to center, his second hit of the game. Andy Dirks then laid down a sacrifice bunt but an errant throw by Rodriguez to first allowed both runners to reach safely. With two outs, Michael Bertram connected on his third hit of the game, an opposite field single scoring Henry for a 2-1 Erie lead. Bertram extended his hitting streak to 10 consecutive games which is the best by a SeaWolf this season.

Erie would then add a third run in the top of the eighth inning against reliever Daniel Turpen. Cale Iorg led off with an infield single and was sacrificed over to second by Andy Bouchie. Iorg moved to third on a Chris White groundout and scored on a single to center from Henry to make it 3-1. Henry finished with his second straight two-hit game.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Squirrels loaded the bases with one out against reliever Brendan Wise. Wise battled out of the jam striking out Matt Klimas and inducing a groundout by Nick Noonan, preserving the 3-1 lead.

Wise worked a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the game, picking up his fourth save of the season.

Oliver (4-1) became the SeaWolves first four-game winner. He allowed a run on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work. Oliver is now 4-0 with three no-decisions since dropping his first outing of the season.

The SeaWolves banged out a season-high 15 hits in the game and improved to 4-1 on the current road trip. Erie is also 12-10 away from Jerry Uht Park.

The ‘Wolves and Flying Squirrels meet in the middle game of the three game series on Wednesday night at The Diamond...7:05 First Pitch. Lefty Duane Below (2-3, 4.05 ERA) takes the mound for the ‘Wolves against RHP David Mixon (4-1, 2.32 ERA).
