Wolves Second Period Surge Sinks the Colts

Blake Murray scored three times leading the Sudbury Wolves to a season sweep of the Barrie Colts in their season series Thursday night.
It was a promising start for the Colts on this night as they came into the game six points back of the Wolves in the Central Division standings. After grabbing the lead late in the first period the Wolves stormed back with four goals in the span of six minutes, kick started by the vision of NHL draft eligible prospect Quinton Byfield as twice he would setup Murray to score.
Skating in his 100th OHL game Evan Vierling collected a trio of assists and Tyson Foerster added a pair of goals to come within just one point of the century mark over his OHL career.
With just nine games remaining in this years regular season, the Barrie Colts kicked off another tough three in three weekend Thursday night. First up would be the latest chapter versus their Central Division rival. The Colts were trying to snap a four game slide as well prevent the Wolves from taking a clean sweep in their eight game season series.
Arturs Silovs made his 36th start of year, and at the other end was Barrie native Mitchell Weeks getting the nod for the Wolves.
An exciting first period saw the action get started less than five minutes into the opening frame.
Byfield flying up the left wing, lead the rush deep into the Colts zone. He'd find Murray alone out front, beating a stretched out Silovs to open the scoring.
Two minutes later the Colts would go to work on the man advantage as the Wolves would be penalized on a tripping call.
Just five seconds into the powerplay Nathan Allensen slid it over to Foerster in his office. Foerster blasted the one timer from the left circle beating Weeks low glove side for his 33rd of the season.
With just over a minute to go in the opening frame Brandt Clarke slipped past a defender at the Wolves blueline and roofed it over Weeks glove for 6th of the campaign.
The Colts would take the lead into first intermission, but the Wolves quick strike offense would be put on display early and often in period number two.
With the two teams skating four on four, that opened things up for Byfield to create another scoring chance and even the game up. Weaving his way through the Colts defense he found Murray back door once again.
A minute later the Wolves dug the puck out from the corner to feed Owen Robinson out front to take the lead.
With eight minutes to go in the second, a turnover right in front of the Barrie goal left the door wide open for Nolan Hutcheson to extend their lead to two and 18 seconds later Nathan Ribau added another. In a span of six minutes the Wolves were left with a commanding 5-2 lead.
The Colts got another powerplay late in the second and it was déjàvu. Just as in the first, Allensen setup Foerster above the left circle to tee it up and blew it past Weeks for his second of the night and 34th of the year to get the Colts back within two.
The third period would see the Colts have a number of chances with the man-advantage, but nothing would amount to a comeback on this night.
Murray sealed the victory for the Wolves with an empty net goal for his third of the night and David Levin and Hutcheson would put exclamation points on it in the late stages as Barrie would dropped their fifth straight.
The weekend won't get any easier for the Colts as they'll get right back at it tomorrow night in Kitchener to face the Rangers before returning home Saturday night to face the league leading Ottawa 67's.
