
Owen Sound Attack Squeeze by Spitfires 3-2 in OT

The Owen Sound Attack rolled into town to faceoff with the Spitfires. This was the third of 4 matchups between the two teams. The Spitfires were 1-1-0 against the Attack this season. The game marked Joe Rupoli's 100th career OHL game.
In the first period, the Spitfires dominated play, but they were not rewarded. The Attack got the games first goal on the powerplay 12:36 into the first period. Late in the period with just over a minute to go, the Attack scored again to take a commanding 2-0 lead. Shots were in favour of the Spitfires 11-7.
In the second frame, the Spitfires and Attack traded multiple penalties, but both team's penalty kills were perfect in the period. The Spitfires made the Attack cough up the puck in the Owen Sound end, and it was Maggio with a beauty feed to Douglas who buried his 29th on the season. Playfair got the secondary assist. Shots were 27-12 after two periods of play.
In the third period with the Spitfires down 2-1 late in the game, the Spitfires pulled the goalie. With the ensuing attacker, the Attack took a penalty with 1:23 remaining. On the powerplay, a mad scramble in front found the stick of Douglas, who tapped it in to tie the game at with 1:09 on the clock. This game needed extra time.
In the overtime period, both teams traded chances; however, it was the Owen Sound Attack who got the game-winning goal with two seconds left in overtime. The final shot count was Spits 35 Attack 25. The Spitfires gain a point and sit 5th in the western conference with 75 points.
The Spitfires' next game is Saturday, March 7th, when the team travels to Flint for an all-important matchup and possibly a preview of a first-round playoff series between the two teams. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Then on Sunday, March 8th, Sportsnet is in town for an afternoon matinee matchup when the Kitchener Rangers come to town. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:05 pm.
