Mohegan Wolves News Release

NEW LONDON, Conn. (July 2, 2003) – The Mohegan Wolves (arenafootball2) are home again this Saturday night, July 5, to tackle the Bossier City (La.) Battle Wings in a non-conference affair at Mohegan Sun Arena. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Wolves are currently 8-4 overall and stand poised to make their first postseason appearance in team history. Mohegan’s record has the team in fourth place in the American Conference playoff race. The top six teams from each conference (American and National) make the postseason.

Saturday night’s festivities won’t include fireworks, but plenty of excitement, as the Wolves will be holding their most-impressive promotion of the season - the “Harley-Davidson Giveaway.” Sparks will surely fly when one lucky fan in attendance will walk away with a BRAND NEW 2003 Harley-Davidson Sportster, courtesy of New London County Motorcycle, 104.7 The Wolf and WFSB Channel 3.

“Everybody’s really looking forward to this game,” Mohegan Coach Mark Stoute said. “With just four games left in the regular season and teams fighting for playoffs spots, it’s getting down to crunch time. Our guys know what’s on the line, and I think they’ll respond.

This week’s game at a glance – Wolves (8-4 overall, Streak: Lost 1) vs. Battle Wings (3-10 overall, Streak: Lost 5)

Saturday’s game is the first-ever meeting between the Wolves and Battle Wings. Bossier City, after starting the season with two wins in its first three games, has since struggled – mightily. The team has managed just one win in its last 10 outings. Most of Bossier City’s troubles stem from the team’s defense, which ranks at or near the bottom of the league in points allowed (26th – 51.7 ppg), total defense (19th – 252.8 ypg) and pass defense (22nd – 236.3 ypg). The Battle Wings have also given up a league-worst 34 sacks. The team’s defensive struggles, however, haven’t been due to the efforts of DS Chris Samson. Samson leads the af2 in tackles (75) and is tied for ninth in tackles for loss (5). On offense, the Battle Wings rely heavily on WR/LB Shadric McAfee. McAfee ranks fifth among the league’s best in all-purpose yards with 2,120 on the year. The Wolves are led, as always, by one of the league’s best defenses. Mohegan is the af2’s top-ranked team in scoring defense, allowing just 36.8 points per game. The Wolves also rank among the league’s best in sacks with 23 overall. Offensively, the Wolves will look for more scores from OS MEL LONG. LONG had a career day in Mohegan ’s loss at Albany last week, collecting career-highs in receptions (10) and receiving yards (161). The rookie from Toledo also caught a career-high-tying four touchdowns. LONG leads the Wolves in every pass-catching category this season, including receptions (53), receiving yards (809) and yards per catch (15.3). Another player to watch on the Wolves this week will be FB/LB LAJHON JONES. JONES ranks in the league’s top-10 in rushing with 162 yards and in rushing touchdowns with 11.

Wolves Game Twelve Recap – 6/28/03 – Albany QB and Game MVP Ryan Vena threw seven touchdowns, three to WR/DB Phil Taylor, as the Conquest defeated the Mohegan Wolves, 60-36, in front of 5,578 fans at the Pepsi Arena. Taylor, who was named the Ironman of the Game, caught six passes for 141 yards and grabbed one tackle and two pass breakups on defense. Taylor has scored three touchdowns in seven different games this season and leads the team with 21 total touchdowns. Mohegan OS MEL LONG led all receivers with 10 catches for 161 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, DS ALLISTAIR SEBASTIEN recorded 6.0 tackles, two interceptions and two pass breakups.
