San Diego Riptide News Release

SAN DIEGO – San Diego Riptide quarterback Kane Claunch has been named the arenafootball2 Offensive Player of the Week after his outstanding game last Saturday night in the Riptide's 60-53 win over the Wichita Stealth breaking their five-game losing streak.

Claunch becomes the first Riptide player ever to earn Offensive Player of the Week honors. He completed 16-of-19 passes for 281 yards with six touchdowns for a perfect passer rating of 158.33 as the Riptide beat the Stealth 60-53 breaking their five-game losing streak. Claunch missed on just three passes with two being broken up and the third being tossed out of bounds to avoid a sack. He also ran for a one-yard touchdown on fourth and goal.

"It's awesome to be honored by the league as the Offensive Player of the Week, but it's the team that made this happen," said Claunch. "I may have tossed a 'perfect rated game' but it was the team as a whole that played perfect in beating a tough Wichita team in their backyard."

To earn a 158.33 rating, a passer must complete 77.5% of his passes, have 15.83% of his passes go for touchdowns, average at least 12.5 yards per attempt and have no interceptions. Claunch completed 84.2% of his passes, had 31.6% of his passes go for scores, had 14.8 yards per attempt and did not toss any interceptions.

The Riptide do not play again until Saturday, July 12 when they travel to Moline, Illionois to take on the two-time ArenaCup champion Quad City Steamwheelers. The following Fridays, the Riptide will be home at the Sports Arena to conclude their 2003 regular season with contests against the Hawaiian Islanders (7/18) and the Green Bay Blizzard (7/25). Kickoff for both games is 7:30pm.

What is passer rating anyway?

Ever wonder what passer rating was and how it is figured out? How does Kane Claunch's game last week in Wichita earn "perfect" game status? Well folks, here's the history of passer rating and how to calculator it.

The current passer rating was formalized in 1973 after a couple of years of calculation to crown a passing champion instead of just giving the title to the quarterback with the most yards or touchdowns. The formula calculates how a passer performs based on four equations: completion percentage, average yards per attempt, touchdown percentage, and interception percentage.

When the formula was created it was based on the season and career numbers of passers before 1970 with the averages for touchdowns, completion percentage and yards per attempt – these numbers had the "average" quarterback with a rating of around 70. The system was derived to be similar to 100-point grading scale with all ratings over 100 considered to be A-pluses.

When the Arena Football League was established in 1987, the formula was adapted for the indoor game where touchdown percentages are much higher. To compensate for the differences, the Arena passer rating system multiples TD% by .15 instead of .20 like the NFL to make the ratings similar in each league.

So here's how the formula is derived for the Arena game...

The maximum any passer can receive in any category is 2.375 and the least is zero.

To gain a 2.375 in each category a passer must do the following:
* Complete 77.5%
* Average 12.5 yards per attempt
* Have 15.83% of his passes go for touchdowns
* Throw no interceptions

The four category scores are then converted to a 100-point scale. The highest any passer can score is 158.33 and the lowest is 39.58 (all scores below are adjusted to this number).

This is how Kane Claunch got a "perfect rated game."

Completion Percentage

16-of-19 is 84.21 percent. Subtract 30 from this (54.21) and multiply the result by 0.05 which is 2.7105. This number is greater than 2.375, so it is adjusted to 2.375.

Average Yards Per Attempt

281 yards divided by 19 attempts is 14.79. Subtract three (11.79) and multiply by 0.25. The result is 2.9475, which is adjusted to 2.375 since it is over that mark.

Touchdown Percentage

Six touchdowns in 19 attempts is 31.58%. Multiply this number by 0.15 and the result is 4.737, which is adjusted to 2.375.

Interception Percentage

He had no interceptions so this number is automatically calculated at 2.375.

The sum of the four steps is (2.375 + 2.375 + 2.375 + 2.375) 9.5. The sum is then divided by six (1.5833) and multiplied by 100 which equals 158.33 and a perfect passer rating.
