Wolves Get Three from Atlanta

The Atlanta Thrashers have assigned forwards RILEY HOLZAPFEL (HOHL-zaf-ehl) and SPENCER MACHACEK (muh-HA-chehk), and defenseman NOAH WELCH (WEHLCH) to the Chicago Wolves.

MACHACEK shared fourth on the Wolves with 20 goals and ranked sixth on the team with a career-high 49 points in 79 games during his second professional campaign last season. The 21-year-old forward also ranked third on the club with a career-best 29 assists and shared sixth on the squad with a +17 plus/minus rating. He also ranked second on the team with seven goals and shared fourth with 11 points in 13 Calder Cup playoff games during the Wolves run to the West Division Finals. Overall, the Lethbridge, Alb., native has posted 43 goals, 97 points and 91 penalty minutes in 156 American Hockey League games with Chicago over two seasons (2008-10). He also made his National Hockey League debut in two games with Atlanta in 2008-09.

WELCH, who accrued four penalty minutes in one preseason game with Atlanta, recorded five points (G, 4A), 33 penalty minutes and a +8 plus/minus rating in 37 outings with the Wolves last season. The 28-year-old blueliner also added two assists and 10 penalty minutes in 14 Calder Cup playoff contests. Overall, the Brighton, Mass., native has appeared in 159 career AHL outings with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (2005-07), Rochester Americans (2006-07; 2008-09) and Chicago (2009-10), recording 47 assists, 64 points and 187 penalty minutes. He also has tallied nine points (4G, 5A) and 58 penalty minutes in 73 NHL contests with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning, spanning four seasons (2005-09).

HOLZAPFEL collected 16 assists, 23 points and 30 penalty minutes in 60 games with the Wolves during his second professional season last year. The 22-year-old forward also dished out three assists in 14 postseason matchups. Overall, the Regina, Sask., native has registered 20 goals, 55 points and 68 penalty minutes in 134 career contests with Chicago from 2008 to 2010.

The Wolves will open their 17th season in Texas when they battle the San Antonio Rampage at the AT&T Center on Fri., Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. The club will face the Admirals in an Amtrak Rivalry matchup for the team's home opener, presented by LifeSource, at the Allstate Arena on Sat., Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. Tickets for all regular-season home games are on sale now - visit chicagowolves.com or call 1-800-THE-WOLVES for more information.
