Peoria Rivermen News Release
PEORIA, Ill. (February 14, 2009) - Robert Gherson made 20 saves and kept the Peoria Rivermen scoreless until 19:21 of the third period to help the Chicago Wolves win 4-1 at Carver Arena on Saturday night. Peoria has now dropped back-to-back meetings with the Wolves to even the season series at 3-3-0.
Chicago scored twice in the final 1:28 of the first period to go ahead 2-0 and never look back. The Wolves peppered Manny Legace with 31 shots over the course of the game to drop his record to 1-2-0 since joining Peoria on Sunday. He has faced at least 30 shots in all three starts with the club.
Jason Taylor pushed a rebound home at 18:32 of the first to open the scoring with his first AHL goal of the year. Just 46 seconds later, Rylan Holzapfel unloaded a slapshot from just inside the blue line that kicked off of Legace's glove and into the net. It was the ninth of the season for Holzapfel.
A fluke goal with five minutes remaining in the second period upped the Chicago lead to 3-0. Jeff Hamilton worked the puck in on a three-on-one down low and his centering attempt bounced off the body of Andy Wozniewski and into the net.
Spencer Machacek's power-play goal at 4:04 of the third period capped the Wolves' scoring. Just 11 seconds after an Ivan Vishnevskiy minor for holding, Clay Wilson setup Machacek on the backdoor for a one-timer and his 14th of the season. Chicago finished 1-for-4 on the power play while Peoria was held scoreless on their four chances.
Jonathan Filewich ruined the shutout bid for Gherson with 38.4 seconds left in regulation. Nicholas Drazenovic centered a pass from behind the net and it rolled through the crease on to stick of Filewich who scored his sixth of the year and fourth with the Rivermen.
The Rivermen will be back on home ice to welcome the Rochester Americans to Carver Arena on Sunday for a 3:00 p.m. start. It will be a Comcast/Journal Star/Fun on the Run/Coke Family day as tickets for kids 12 and under can be purchased for just $1.
