February 14, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Abbotsford Heat News Release
The Flames offense exploded for six second period goals en route to a 7-3 win over San Antonio on Saturday night. The seven goal output established a new club record for goals in a game. The team also set a new franchise high for goals in a single period with six tallies in the middle frame. Carsen Germyn established a new franchise high for points in a game with five (a goal and four assists). Kris Chucko scored twice in the win while Matt Pelech, Cam Cunning, Warren Peters and David Van der Gulik contributed single tallies.
The teams traded markers early in the first period. San Antonio's Kevin Porter made a nifty move to slip past the Quad City defense and score his eighth goal of the year during a stretch of 4-on-4 hockey. The Flames answered back one minute later. Matt Pelech was pulled down during a breakaway and awarded the first penalty shot of his professional career. Pelech converted on the chance to tie the game at one. The teams skated scoreless through the remainder of the opening period.
The Flames established franchise records for goals in a period (six) and total goals (seven) in the second period. The tidal wave of offense began with three goals in a span of 47 seconds. Cam Cunning scored his third goal of the year followed by Kris Chucko's 18th tally just 17 seconds later. Warren Peters tipped home a Brad Cole point shot exactly 30 ticks after Chucko's marker. The Flames extended their lead to 5-1 when David Van der Gulik scored on a wraparound at 6:36 of the period. San Antonio netted their only goal of the period at 11:19 of the frame when Simon Ferguson scored on a breakaway. The Flames added another pair of goals late as Chucko scored for the second time in the period and Carsen Germyn netted his first goal of the night. Germyn scored by deflecting a Gord Baldwin point shot with just three seconds left in the period. It was Germyn's fifth point of the period as he had assisted on four of the Flames goal. The tally established a new Flames record for points by a single player in a game. Quad City left the ice with a 7-2 lead after two periods.
The Rampage scored the only goal of the third period when Brett MacLean jammed home a rebound following a shot by Francis Lessard. The tally set the final at 7-3 in favor of the Flames.
