Wolter Strikes Twice But Dawgs Fall in Shootout, 4-3

MACON, Ga. - Colton Wolter matched a season-high with two goals and the Rail Yard Dawgs took a 3-2 lead in the third but they were ultimately defeated by the Macon Mayhem in a shootout, 4-3, Friday night at the Macon Centreplex.

The Mayhem opened the scoring a minute and a half into the first period. Alex D'Oliveira intercepted a Rail Yard Dawgs clearing attempt and quickly snapped a shot on net. It beat at screened Ian Sylves top shelf and Macon took a 1-0 lead.

Roanoke wasted little time in answering and tying the game. Mac Jansen sprinted down the right wing and sent a backhanded pass to the front of the net. It redirected off a charging Wolter and into the net to make the score 1-1.

Macon managed to regain the lead just over a minute and a half later while working on a power play. Stephen Pierog took a slap shot from the right wing circle that snuck past Sylves on the short side and the Mayhem went back on top, 2-1.

The Dawgs tied things up in the second again thanks to Wolter. Nick Kalpouzos took a shot from the high slot that was stopped but Wolter crashed the net on the back door. He was able to stuff his second rebound attempt under Kevin Entmaa's pad and the score was evened at two.

Roanoke grabbed the lead for the first time in the third period. Aaron Huffnagle carried to puck to the front of the net but lost the handle during his deke. It sat loose in the crease until Travis Armstrong reached in and jammed it into the net to make the score 3-2.

The Mayhem would not go away, however, and tied things up while working on the power play with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. Anton Lindstrom was knocked down in the slot but managed to send the puck to Marcus Ortiz at the left wing circle. He ripped a shot over Sylves' shoulder on the short side and Macon tied the score at three.

Following an uneventful overtime, the game moved into a shootout. Sylves and Entmaa dueled through six scoreless rounds until Danny Cesarz broke the scoreless tie with a five hole goal in the seventh. Jeff Jones' attempt to tie in the Dawgs' half went wide and the Mayhem took the game and the extra point, 4-3.

Wolter matched a season-high with two goals, Armstrong scored for the second time in as many games and Sylves made 26 saves in the losing effort. The Rail Yard Dawgs moved to 4-11-3 with the loss while Macon improved to 6-11-2. Roanoke will return to action at home on Saturday night against the Fayetteville Marksmen at 7:05 PM.
