January 24, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Connecticut Whale News Release
HARTFORD, January 24, 2008: The Hartford Wolf Pack's home game at the XL Center this Saturday night, January 26th vs. the AHL-leading Providence Bruins is "Al Montoya Bobblehead Night". The first 5,000 fans into the game will take home a bobblehead of the Wolf Pack's charismatic goaltender, one of the top netminding prospects in hockey.
Montoya, a third-year pro, was drafted by the parent New York Rangers with the sixth pick of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, the earliest in the draft that the Rangers have ever selected a goaltender. A 22-year-old native of the Chicago area, Montoya, who is of Cuban descent, became the first Cuban-American player ever drafted by an NHL club when he was selected by the Rangers, and the occasion of his dressing as the Rangers' backup goaltender for a game October 13, 2005 vs. New Jersey marked the first time a Cuban-American had ever suited up for an NHL game.
Prior to turning pro, Montoya backstopped the U.S. Team to its first, and so far only, gold medal in the World Junior Championships in the 2004 event, earning the Directorate Award as the tournament's top goaltender. He also played three seasons at the University of Michigan, and finished his college career tied for the all-time best career save percentage (90.8) in U. Michigan history, third in goals-against average (2.36) and shutouts (13) in the program's history, fourth in wins (86) and fifth in minutes-played (7,247).
In his Wolf Pack career, Montoya is the second all-time winningest goalie in franchise history (behind Jason LaBarbera), with a record of 61-34-4 in 113 appearances, a 2.47 GAA, a 91.0% save percentage and eight shutouts. Montoya has compiled an 11-8-3 record thus far this year with the Wolf Pack, along with a GAA of 2.56 and a 90.5% save percentage.
Before Saturday's Al Montoya Bobblehead Night, the Wolf Pack are in action at the XL Center tomorrow night, Friday, January 25th, taking on the Worcester Sharks in a 7:00 game. That is Guida's Family Value Night. Saturday night's faceoff time is also 7:00.
