AHL All-Stars set to visit Family Enrichment Network, Wilson Medical Center

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Members of the Canadian and PlanetUSA 2008 AHL All- Star teams, along with team mascots from various American Hockey League teams, will be visiting Family Enrichment Network and Wilson Medical Center on Monday, January 28 beginning at 10:00 a.m. The AHL's community outreach program is a staple of its annual All-Star event.

One group of players will visit more than 225 children at Family Enrichment Network in Johnson City from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The players will visit different classrooms and read to the children.

"Family Enrichment Network is thrilled to have the All-Stars take the time to visit the children we serve in our community," said Darrell Newvine, Family Enrichment Network's executive director. "These players are role models to our youth, teaching kids that if they work hard and believe in themselves, they can be an all star one day too."

Family Enrichment Network serves more than 350 children and their families in both Broome and Tioga counties. Their mission is to provide supporting services for the optimal developmental, educational, emotional and physical growth of the young children in their service area. This mission includes a strong commitment to partnering with families to achieve this goal.

The second group of players will visit patients in the Oncology and Pediatric units at Wilson Medical Center from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

"United Health Services is thrilled to provide oncology and pediatric patients and employees the opportunity to meet with the visiting American Hockey League All-Star's," said Carol Gorenflo, marketing coordinator for United Health Services. "Hockey is such an integral part of this community; we are honored to have players come and brighten our patients' day."

Wilson Regional Medical Center is a 296-bed teaching hospital providing a full range of medical-surgical services, including cardiology, emergency medicine, neonatology, nephrology, maternity care, pediatrics, perinatology, pulmonary medicine, neuroscience, ophthalmology, and renal dialysis.

The 2008 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Reebok will feature the top young talent in the American Hockey League competing in the 2008 CCM AHL All-Star Skills Competition on Sunday, January 27 (7:00 ET), and the 2008 AHL All-Star Game on Monday, January 28 (7:00 ET). The event will be televised nationally in the United States and Canada.

Of the 427 players to take part in the AHL All-Star Classic since 1995, more than 93 percent have competed in the National Hockey League, including Patrice Bergeron, Brad Boyes, Daniel Briere, Zdeno Chara, Jonathan Cheechoo, Pavol Demitra, Rick DiPietro, Patrik Elias, Ray Emery, Jiri Hudler, Miikka Kiprusoff, Kari Lehtonen, Ryan Miller, Martin St. Louis, Jason Spezza, Eric Staal and Steve Sullivan.
