Wolf Blanks Spokane for 2-0 Everett Win
November 18, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Everett Silvertips News Release
EVERETT, Wash. - Dustin Wolf moved into third place on the franchise all-time list with his 13th career shutout and Wyatte Wylie's power play goal stood as the eventual winner to lift the Everett Silvertips to a 2-0 victory over the Spokane Chiefs on Sunday, before 4,123 fans at Angel of the Winds Arena in downtown Everett in WHL action.
Rebounding from a 5-4 overtime loss the night prior against Winnipeg, the Tips earned a point for the 10th time in 11 games while maintaining their first place lead in the U.S. Division. They improved to 4-0-0-0 against Spokane this season and have won 10 of their last 12 regular season meetings.
Tell-tale of the Tips response level, it was only th 51st time they played in a game following a loss since Dennis Williams took over as head coach. They won for a staggering 36th time.
UP NEXT: The Tips take a four-day break and return for the final leg of a three-game homestand on Friday, Mitch Love Night, at 7:35 p.m. (KRKO / WHL Live / Tips App) in downtown Everett. Mitch Love bobblheads will be given to the first 1,000 fans in attendance and a special pre-game ceremony will be held at center ice before the opening face-off (fans are encouraged to be in their seats early).
The Tips came out strong against a road weary Spokane squad, playing in their third road game in as many days, with a 13-5 shots advantage in the first period and had their best look on a Bryce Kindopp follow-up snap shot, inside of the left circle, but goaltender Campbell Arnold sharply tracked it into his glove.
In the second period, the Tips took advantage of a Reed Jacobson interference penalty - in the offensive zone - and wasted little time going up 1-0. Wyatte Wylie uncorked a snap shot from the left point past Arnold, after the Tips won the draw and Cole Fonstad fed a point-to-point pass into Wylie's wheelhouse at 6:08.
Remarkably - Spokane countered with a strong third period and posted 12 of the 14 shots fired in the final frame - and Wolf came up with strong saves in the first 15 seconds on a Jack Finley re-direction and then on Bobby Russell's rip from the right circle with less than five minutes left.
The Tips escaped late penalty trouble and after Ronan Seeley was nailed for delay of game with 2:04 left, Spokane pulled Arnold for an extra attacker. However, the Tips righted the ship following Saturday night's overtime loss, which included an extra attacker goal by Winnipeg in the last minute of regulation, and sealed Sunday's victory on a shorthanded, empty net clear by Gianni Fairbrother from 140 feet away with 36 seconds left.
Wolf made 22 saves in the shutout win and Arnold made 25 stops as Spokane had their three game win streak snapped.
THREE STARS:
1. Dustin Wolf (EVT)
2. Wyatte Wylie (EVT)
3. Campbell Arnold (SPO)
NOTES: Scratched from the lineup were Braden Holt (healthy), Dawson Butt (three-game suspension), Tyson Phare (injury), and Jalen Price (healthy) ... Fonstad has earned a point in all seven games with the Tips ... Wylie has 22 points in his last 22 games against Spokane ... Wolf moved past Michael Wall into third, all time on the Tips shutout list and needs eight more shutouts to reach Leland Irving for 2nd, all-time.
