Swift Current Broncos News Release
SWIFT CURRENT, SK - The Swift Current Broncos (4-11-1-2) are hoping a meeting with an old rival will help spark them to victory as they travel East on the Trans-Canada Highway to meet the Regina Pats (3-12-2-0) in a battle between two teams in the rebuilding stage.
Saturday the Broncos snapped a five-game losing streak with a 7-3 drubbing of the Moose Jaw Warriors. Newly-signed 20-year-old forward Jaxan Kaluski led the charge with two goals and two assists to make a strong first impression on the Broncos faithful as he was playing his first home game with his new team.
Sergei Alkhimov also had a strong game as he scored the Broncos first goal and assisted on Ethan Regnier's game winner in his first home game with his new team. In all, six players had multi point games to lift the Broncos over the Warriors.
Saturday was also the first time this season the Broncos have won when giving up the opening goal as Moose Jaw scored 6:08 into the first period. The team also battled back from being down 3-1 early in the second period, a testament to the hard work some of the new faces bring to the lineup.
The Pats have gotten off to an equally slow start this season with just three wins in their first 17 games. Keeping pucks out of the net has been a challenge for both clubs, as the Broncos (77) and Pats (75) rank 20th and 19th in the league for goals against respectively. Only Red Deer (85) and Winnipeg (83) have surrendered more goals, though both teams have played more games than the Pats and Broncos.
Regina may be hitting their stride in recent weeks however as seven of their last eight games have been decided by a single goal, with four of those being decided in overtime or a shootout. Saturday the Pats picked up a 4-3 shootout win over the Prince Albert Raiders to end a four-game slide.
The season series between the two teams last year was split down the middle as Regina won the first three before the Broncos took the final three meetings. The last two victories came via a shutout, so Swift Current enters Tuesday's game with a 151:21 shutout streak against Regina.
