Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, Mass. - Rox starter Mike Wlodarczyk allowed two runs on four hits in seven innings of work, striking out eight, as Brockton defeated the Sussex Skyhawks, 6-2, in a Can-Am League game at Campanelli Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The lefthander earned his sixth victory of the season, putting him in the league lead, while the eight strikeouts gave him a total of 53 on the year, also first in the loop.

Sussex (20-17) put a run on the board in the first when CF Carl Loadenthal smacked a two-out single, moved to second on a walk, and scored on successive wild pitches.

The Rox (21-15) responded in the second with three consecutive singles by DH Clyde Williams, C Chris Grossman and CF Chris Valencia, who brought home Williams to tie the contest at one.

Brockton took a 4-1 lead in the third when 1B Melvin Falu drove in 2B Scott Wearne with a sacrifice fly, followed by 3B Phillip Cuadrado's two-run home run, his sixth of the season.

The Skyhawks trimmed the Rox lead to two in the fifth on an RBI single by Loadenthal, but Brockton quickly made it 6-2 in its half of the fifth on RF Keith Brachold's league-leading eighth home run of the season, a solo shot, and an RBI groundout by C Chris Grossman.

The score stayed the same the rest of the way, with Wlodarczyk (6-1) and Colin Lynch shutting down Sussex's league-best offense. Jusef Frias (1-2) took the loss for the Skyhawks, allowing all six runs on ten hits in five innings of work.

The Rox put together a balanced attack on the evening, with SS Dominic Ramos, Cuadrado, Williams and Valencia each getting a pair of hits. Loadenthal and LF Kraig Binick both had 2-for-4 nights on the Skyhawks' side.

The two teams will meet in the fifth and final game of the series on Wednesday night at Campanelli Stadium at 7:05 p.m. for World Cup Night, with soccer-themed activities at the park all game long. Mike McGuire (3-3) toes the slab for Sussex against Brockton's Freddy Flores (4-0).
