Dakota Wizards News Release
BISMARCK, ND, November 11, 2008 - The NBA Development League Central Division Champion Dakota Wizards announced today that they have acquired veteran forward Denham Brown, who was the ninth overall pick by the Utah Flash in last week's 2008 D-League draft. In exchange for Brown, the Wizards are sending guard Dontell Jefferson to Utah.
"It's a double edge sword for us", said Wizards head coach Duane Ticknor following the trade. "On one side we are losing a good player in Dontell, but on the other we are gaining a proven scorer at this level and a guy we can play in multiple positions in Denham."
Brown, a 6'6 220 lb forward from the University of Connecticut, was the 40th overall pick by the Seattle Supersonics in the 2006 NBA Draft. Following his release from the Sonics, Brown entered the 2006 D-League Draft and was selected by the Tulsa 66ers in the first round (eighth overall). While with Tulsa, Brown averaged 18.6 points and 5.4 rebounds and appeared in 42 games.
Following the 2006-07 season in the states, Brown headed overseas to play nine games in Turkey, then signed on to play with Tisettanta Cantu in Italy during the 2007-08 season. Brown averaged 9.5 points and pulled down 4.8 boards in 32 games with the Italian team.
Prior to his professional career, Brown had a successful career at UCONN, including being a member of the 2004 NCAA National Championship team. His resume also includes being a member of the Canadian Senior National team for several international competitions, including in 2005, when he scored 28 points and pulled down 9 rebounds enroute to upsetting Team USA to qualify for the FIBA World Championship Qualifying Tournament.
Jefferson played two seasons with the Wizards after being selected in the fifth round of the 2006 D-League draft. Jefferson was a member of the Wizards D-League Championship team in 2006-07 and appeared in 33 games during the 2007-08 campaign before leaving Dakota in February and signing with a team in Latvia.
The Dakota Wizards home opener is Saturday, Nov. 29 against the Iowa Energy at the Bismarck Civic Center. For additional information, log on to www.dakotawizards.com or call (701) 258-BALL.
