March 25, 2004 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Sporting Kansas City News Release
KANSAS CITY, MO (Monday, March 22, 2004) -Kansas City Wizards General Manager Curt Johnson announced today that the Wizards will partner with Spanish language radio station KCZZ 1480 AM "La Doble Zeta" for the 2004 season. As part of the partnership, "La Doble Zeta" will broadcast all 15 Wizards home games live on 1480 AM, including a pregame and postgame show.
"We are thrilled to partner with 'La Doble Zeta' and to have 15 Wizards games available on Spanish language radio," said Johnson. "We have an enthusiastic base of fans in the Latino community throughout Kansas City and want to make it easier for Spanish speaking fans to follow the Wizards. Soccer is the number one sport in Kansas City's growing Latino community."
Calling the game will be local Kansas City Spanish sports/news personalities Alberto Herrerias, Ivan "El Gordo" Duin and Francisco "La Fiera" Escutia. Herrerias served as the "Voice of Chivas de Guadalajara" for Lotus Communications in Los Angeles for five years before coming to Kansas City in 2001. He is also involved in producing Spanish-language newspapers Deportes Hoy in Los Angeles and El Informador in Kansas City.
Joining Herrierias in the booth are two KCZZ 1480 AM on-air talents. Ivan "El Gordo" Duin, a native of Venezuela, hosts the evening show for "La Doble Zeta" and was involved in various sports broadcasts in his home country before coming to the United States. Francisco "La Fiera" Escutia is a native of Mexico and hosts the Morning Show on 1480 AM. Escutia has also worked in radio in Chicago and Mexico City before landing on Kansas City's Spanish airwaves. He is a five-year veteran of soccer broadcasting in his native country of Mexico.
The Wizards Spanish language radio broadcasts will compliment the various other partnerships the organization has with the Latino Community. The Wizards continue to be involved with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and are involved in a number of events with them throughout the year. The Wizards and Major League Soccer will also feature a "Hispanic Heritage Night" at Arrowhead Stadium on July 10th. This annual event honors some of Kansas City's most influential Latino leaders.
The 2004 season will also mark the first time the Wizards have been involved with "La Liga International" an Adult Hispanic Soccer League in Kansas City. "La Liga" is comprised of 48 teams from around the Kansas City metro area.
