Wizards Battle Back In 3-2 Win Over Rhinos

The Kansas City Wizards scored late in the second half to take the game into overtime and scored the golden goal beating the Rochester Raging Rhinos 3-2 at Webster Municipal Stadium on Wednesday night. Dario Fabbro put the Wizards on the board in the 86th minute and Igor Simutenkov had the game tying goal just four minutes later when he headed the ball into the back of the net in the 90th+ minute. The game went into overtime with both teams battling back and forth. Chris Brown collected a pass from Stephen Armstrong and one timed the ball in the 105th+ minute scoring the golden goal.

5' The Rochester Raging Rhinos took the lead early in the 5th minute. Defender Mali Walton made a square pass to midfielder Temoc Suarez who collected and hit a clean ball from 25 yards out just past Wizards goalkeeper Tony Meola.

8' Wizards midfielder Eric Quill charged down the middle of the field serving the ball to midfielder Chris Klein who was making his way down the right flank. Klein collected and served the ball into the box but the ball was cleared by Rochester's defense.

12' The Wizards saw there first scoring opportunity in the 12th minute. Preki collected and served the ball to forward Stephen Armstrong who was on the left flank. Armstrong lofted the ball to midfielder Eric Quill who was located in the middle of the box. Quill headed the ball on goal but Rhinos goalkeeper Pat Onstad was there to make the save.

13' Rochester's midfielder Lenin Steenkamp lined up for the corner kick finding midfielder Temoc Suarez who took the shot but Wizards midfielder Eric Quill was there to clear the ball out.

22' Wizards midfielder Kerry Zavagnin had a shot 25 yards out but the ball went high over the crossbar.

31' Preki lined up for a Wizards freekick from 20 yards out. The ball was blocked by the Rhinos defensive wall.

42' Wizards forward Stephen Armstrong charged down the right flank and served the ball inside the 18-yard box looking for midfielder Eric Quill. The ball was cleared by Rhinos midfielder Martin Nash creating a Wizards corner kick.

45'+ Kansas City looked to tie the score in the 45+ minute. Midfielder Eric Quill from 10 yards out had a shot on goal but Rhinos goalkeeper Pat Onstad was there to collect the ball. The first half ended with the Wizards trailing 0-1.

49' Kansas City came out strong in the start of the second half. Wizards forward Dario Fabbro worked the Rhinos defense in the 49th minute drawing a corner kick.

53' Wizards dominated play as they entered the second half. Midfielder Chris Klein threaded a pass to midfielder Eric Quill who took a shot on goal. Rhinos 'keeper Pat Onstad punched the ball out of play allowing for a Kansas City corner kick.

63' Rochester notched their second goal of the night in the 63rd minute. Rhinos forward Dan Stebbins passed the ball off to forward Kirk Wilson who was 8 yards out from the goal. Wilson broke between the defense and shot the ball just over the right shoulder of Wizards goalkeeper Tony Meola.

78' The Wizards continued to dominate play. Wizards second half substitute Chris Brown worked the ball with forwards Dario Fabbro and Stephen Armstrong and midfielder Diego Gutierrez threatening the Rhinos defense.

86' Wizards midfielder Chris Brown looked for forward Igor Simutenkov who was situated inside the box. Simutenkov collected the ball and slipped it to forward Dario Fabbro. Fabbro beat Rhinos defender Craig Demmin and shot the ball from 10 yards out. The ball went low and past Rhinos 'keeper Pat Onstad. Kansas City now trailed 1-2 in the 86th minute.

90+' Wizards midfielder Diego Gutierrez from the left flank lofted a perfectly placed ball into the 18-yard box. Forward Igor Simutenkov was there to head the ball past Rhinos goalkeeper Pat Onstad. The goal tied the game at 2-2 leading the Wizards into overtime.

94' Wizards forward Igor Simutenkov nearly ended the game with a goal off of a freekick. Simutenkov lined up for the freekick, the ball bounced up and hit the crossbar. Rhinos defense was there to clear the ball out.

101' Rhinos midfielder Tommy Tanner looked to score in the 101st minute. Tanner took a shot on goal but Wizards goalkeeper Tony Meola deflected the ball out of the Wizards box and back into play.

105+' Wizards midfielder Chris Brown notched the game-winning goal in the 105+ minute. Wizards forward Stephen Armstrong slotted a ball through Rochester defense to Brown who was directly in front of him. Brown one timed the ball from 15 yards out and found the back on the net. The game ended in overtime with the Kansas City Wizards over the Rochester Raging Rhinos 3-2.

The Wizards will face Milwaukee Rampage of the A-League in the Quarterfinals of the 2002 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Tournament. Kansas City will travel from Rochester to Los Angeles where they will return to MLS action on Saturday, July 20th. The Wizards will face the Los Angeles Galaxy at 9:00 p.m. CT from The Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The Wizards-Galaxy match will be broadcast live on Metro Sports beginning at 9:00 p.m. CT.
