Mathis Surgery Successful

New York Red Bulls News Release

SECAUCUS, NJ (July 17, 2002) - MetroStars forward/midfielder Clint Mathis underwent successful arthroscopic surgery today to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, and will begin rehabilitation tomorrow to prepare for his return to Major League Soccer action by mid-August.

Dr. Bert Mendelbaum performed the 40-minute procedure today in Los Angeles, where Mathis will remain through the weekend to begin his rehab work. Dr. Mendelbaum, the U.S. national team doctor, also repaired Mathis' torn right ACL last June (the two injuries are unrelated).

Mathis, who should return to the MetroStars lineup in time for their August 17th home game against the Dallas Burn, suffered the meniscus tear during the MetroStars' 3-2 road win over the Columbus Crew on July 6th. He will miss the team's next three MLS games-this Saturday at home against the New England Revolution, and road games next week at Kansas City (Wednesday, July 24th) and at Chicago (Saturday, July 27th). The MetroStars' next scheduled MLS game following that trip is the August 17th home game against Dallas.

After returning from the 2002 World Cup in late June, Mathis played in three games for the MetroStars, including the Columbus game in which he was injured. He registered two assists in his first game back, a 2-0 road win over New England on June 29, and has notched two goals and two assists (six points) in eight total MLS games this season.
