Arkansas Travelers News Release
Arkansas Traveler catcher Flint Wipke was recalled to Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday, while lefthanded pitcher Mike Anton was placed on the seven-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain. Catcher Brian Walker and lefthanded pitcher Alexander Torres have been transferred to the Travelers' roster from Class A-Advanced Rancho Cucamonga (California).
Wipke had a .245 average, 4 home runs and 18 RBIs in 43 Double-A games. The 26-year-old played one game with Salt Lake in May, where he went 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Anton, 24, has a 2-8 record with Arkansas and 5.48 ERA. He lasted just two innings in his last start, giving up five runs, before coming out of the game because of the hamstring injury. Anton suffered the strain in pre-game warm-ups, slipping in the bullpen on a day where it had rained most of the early afternoon at Dickey-Stephens Park.
Walker batted .291 in the California League with five home runs, seven doubles and 21 RBIs. The 24-year-old catcher, drafted in 2007 by the Los Angeles Angels in the 29th round out of the University of Arkansas, has made three errors in 38 games. He played 41 games with the Travs in 2008, batting .182 with four home runs and 14 RBIs.
Torres, 21, was 10-3 with a 2.74 ERA in 19 starts for Rancho Cucamonga. Torres, a 5-foot-10 lefty from Valencia, Venezuela, was tied for the league lead in strikeouts with 124 in 121.1 innings. Although he also led the league in walks (63), he had the second-most innings pitched and his ERA was second-best in the league as well.
The Arkansas roster stands at a full 24 active players, while there are four Travelers on the disabled list, infielder Ivan Contreras (ankle), outfielder Branden Florence (hamstring) and pitchers Anton and Jordan Walden (forearm).
