Winterhawks Weekly: Stunners

January 8, 2024 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

Now THAT'S how you kick off 2024!

The Winterhawks took two wins off some stout competition last week, with both coming in very dramatic fashion. Friday saw them knock off the Everett Silvertips in a shootout after Marcus Nguyen's late game-tying goal helped the Hawks complete a comeback on Where's Waldo Night. Then, the team took down Western Conference-leading Prince George on the back of Josh Davies' game-winning goal with one minute to play.

Looking ahead, a home-and-home with Seattle awaits, including the return of Pride Night on Saturday! See you there!

Hot Hawks:

Forward James Stefan posted four points (1G, 3A) in Saturday's win over the Cougars, marking his fourth showing with three or more points since Dec. 8. The Laguna Beach, Calif. native ranks second on the team in points (55) and goals (25).

Forward Josh Davies bagged three goals in two games to push his team-leading total to 27 on the year. The Florida Panthers prospect netted Portland's first goal in each game, then struck for the game-winner in the final minute on Saturday.

Forward Marcus Nguyen scored twice in Friday's win over Everett - both times shorthanded. Nguyen has five goals in his last five games, and leads the league in shorthanded tallies with five.

Defenseman Luca Cagnoni recorded three assists last week and boasts five points in his last four games (2G, 3A). The San Jose Sharks prospect ranks second among all WHL defensemen with 44 points (7G, 37A) on the year.

Goaltender Nick Avakyan picked up wins in both halves of the back-to-back, stopping 28 shots on Friday and 37 on Saturday. Avakyan has won seven of his nine appearances since joining the Winterhawks, including five consecutive games since returning from the holiday break.

Weekly Rewind:

Josh Davies scored twice, including a dramatic game-winner with one minute to play, to help push the Winterhawks to a 4-3 win over the Prince George Cougars on Saturday night.
