Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks, proud member club of the Western Hockey League, are proud to announce that they have signed defenseman Alex Thompson to a WHL Standard Player Agreement.
The Winterhawks selected Thompson in the fourth round, #84 overall of the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft during a strong season with the Sioux Falls Power AAA program. The Winnipeg, Man. native posted eight goals and 14 assists for 22 points in 49 games from the Power blueline during the 2021-22 campaign.
"It's a big day for the organization when we can get a signed agreement with one of the top defensemen from the '06 class. Alex is a bright, quality person who had many options and we're thrilled with his decision to pursue his hockey career in a Winterhawks jersey," said Assistant to the General Manager and Director of Scouting Mike Coflin.

Prior to his success with Sioux Falls, the 5-foot-8, 146-pound defenseman spent the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons with Rink Hockey Academy in Winnipeg, Man. There, he posted six goals and 10 assists for 16 points in 31 games across two campaigns, plus an additional goal and three assists during a pair of playoff contests in 2020.
During his first action in Portland, Thompson logged two goals and an assist with Team Pouliot during the Winterhawks' Neely Cup Training Camp last week. He becomes the fifth player from the Winterhawks' 2006-born draft class to sign with the team, joining Luke Brunen, Cole Cairns, Hudson Darby and Carsyn Dyck.
