Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks have joined with the Oregon College Savings Plan and Harriet Tubman Middle School on a partnership that will feature Winterhawks players working with students in P.E. and Health Classes at the school.
Harriet Tubman was completely remodeled this past year with the goal success for all of their students who came from four different schools. When Winterhawks education advisor Sue Johnson met with the school's staff this past summer, she came away thinking this would be perfect fit. Principal Natasha Butler spent months getting to know parents of all of the feeder schools to figure out electives and after-school offerings including PE and Health classes where the Winterhawks partnership will focus. In PE, the players will play a variety of games, participate and lead work-outs and inspire students in sportsmanship and engagement. In Health, Winterhawks will be conducting question and answer sessions with students and will be developing and teaching lessons in conjunction with their health curriculum at Clackamas Community College.
"We think this will be a growing experience for our players as well helping Harriet Tubman teachers and students," said Johnson. "Our players will be working with middle school students from a wide variety of social and ethnic backgrounds, so it will be fun to see how this experience affects everyone."
Winterhawks players are scheduled to have several sessions over the course of the hockey season that will culminate with a reading day/read-a-thon at the school in late February.
The Oregon College Savings Plan has partnered with the Winterhawks on sponsoring several projects involving players visiting local schools in past years as well, including several with the goal to motivate students to read more books.
"Reading opens doors to new worlds and possibilities. It's also one of the best ways to help youths prepare for college. As we work to help them become financially ready for college, we're thrilled to help them with this part of the journey, too," said David Bell, Deputy Director of the Oregon Savings Network.
The Oregon College Savings Plan helps families invest their own money to meet their higher education goals. Money saved can be used for tuition, fees, books and room and board at universities, colleges, trade schools and community colleges across the country.
