Winterhawks Hosting Salute To Buckaroos On February 5th

The Winterhawks will be paying tribute to Portland's original hockey dynasty when they host the annual Salute to the Buckaroos on Friday, February 5 at their game against the Seattle Thunderbirds at the Rose Garden.

Fans can come and pay tribute to the stars of the Buckaroos teams that finished first eight times and won three championships in their 14 years of existence from 1960-1974. Among the former players who will be in attendance on Feb. 5 are Norm Johnson, Art Jones, Connie Madigan, Tom McVie and team founder Harry Glickman.

In addition, the Winterhawks will have the Lester Patrick Cup on display at the game, the WHL championship trophy the Buckaroos won in 1961, 1965 and 1971. The trophy resides at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Canada, and will be the first time many of the Buckaroos will have seen it since their last championship in 1971.

The evening starts with a pre-game reception at 5 p.m. in the Rose Garden's Rose Room. For just $50 fans can get in to the catered event and meet all their childhood hockey heroes. "The Buckaroos are an important part of Portland's sports history with a whole generation of sports fans who grew up idolizing them," said Portland Winterhawks President Doug Piper. "It's an honor to bring them back again and give those fans a chance to pay tribute to them."

The game also represents the final regular season meeting in Portland between the Winterhawks and Thunderbirds this season.

February 5 is also the American Heart Association's National Wear Red Day, an initiative to raise awareness for women's heart disease. The Winterhawks are encouraging fans to wear red to the game to support the cause.
