The Portland Winterhawks (37-6-1-1) dropped a 4-3 decision in Seattle Saturday against the Thunderbirds (17-26-2-1).
Brendan Leipsic got the Hawks on the board with his 30th goal of the season 6:44 into the game for a 1-0 lead. The Thunderbirds came back with goals from Roberts Lipsbergs and Connor Honey to take a 2-1 lead into the second period.
The Hawks tied it at 2-2 when Ty Rattie scored his 20th of the season 1:32 into the second, but the Thunderbirds went back up on top on a goal by Branden Troock at the 4:59 mark to make it 3-2, a lead they took into the third period.
Seattle went up by two when Adam Kambeitz scored 9:40 into the frame, but the Hawks got back within one on a goal from Nic Petan at the 13:55 mark. The score remained 4-3 late in the frame, and despite generating numerous chances late in the game, Portland couldn't get the equalizer.
Several Winterhawks extended lengthy point streaks tonight. Leipsic's goal and two assists gave him a 14-game streak, Nic Petan's goal and two assists extended his streak to nine games and Rattie's goal gave him points in all six games since returning from the World Junior Championship.
The Hawks are back in action with a 3 p.m. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day matinee in Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Coliseum's curtains will be open for the game, allowing daylight into the arena bowl.
