Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks (48-19-3-1) fell 3-1 in a road contest against the Victoria Royals (24-41-3-4) Friday.

With the Tri-City Americans winning 4-1 over the Everett Silvertips, the Americans clinch the Western Conference and Portland will finish third (Kamloops will get the second seed for winning the B.C. Division).

The Hawks will take on the sixth place Kelowna Rockets in the first round of the playoffs in a rematch of last year's second round series Portland won in six games.

The Royals scored the lone goal of the first period when Dakota Conroy scored at the 14:25 mark to give Victoria a 1-0 lead going into the second.

The Hawks evened it up just 55 seconds into the second period when Nic Petan scored to tie the game at 1-1. Portland fired 16 shots at the Royals in the period, but the game remained 1-1 going into the third.

Victoria then took a 2-1 lead 5:40 into the third on a goal by Mike Forsyth, then made it 3-1 on a goal by Jamie Crooks at the 7:28 mark. The Hawks applied pressure throughout the period to try to even the game, but Victoria held on for the win.

Portland outshot the Royals 38-32 in the loss. Royals netminder Keith Hamilton stopped 37 of the 38 Portland shots he faced. Hawks goaltender Mac Carruth made 29 saves on 32 shots.

Dominic Turgeon made his WHL debut for the Hawks tonight. He was the team's third round pick, 64th overall, of the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft, and is the son of former NHL player Pierre Turgeon.

The Hawks play their regular season finale Sunday against the Seattle Thunderbirds at 5 p.m. in Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Before the game the team will honor former Portland Buckaroo Connie Madigan, followed by the presentation of the team's annual awards.
