Winston-Salem Dash News Release
FREDERICK, Md. (April 10, 2015) - One night after a prolific offensive victory, Winston-Salem's offense missed out on multiple opportunities and dropped a 3-2 decision at Frederick on Friday night at NYMEO Field at Harry Grove Stadium.
Trailing by two in the ninth inning, the Dash (1-1) loaded the bases with nobody out thanks to a single and two walks. Frederick righty Jon Keller responded with a strikeout of Adam Engel. Jake Peter, who collected two hits, sharply rolled a ball to third, and Drew Dosch made a diving stab and a strong throw to first to record the second out of the inning.
Keller finished the two-inning save by inducing a routine groundout off the bat of Trey Michalczewski. In all, the Dash stranded 10 runners and went hitless in eight at-bats with men in scoring position. Winston-Salem set up three bases loaded situations with less than two outs but only mustered two runs in those frames.
The tough offensive night overshadowed the strong High-A debut for southpaw Jace Fry (0-1). Fry surrendered just a first-inning, unearned run over five innings, during which he whiffed five. The White Sox third-round pick in 2014, Fry had never logged more than two innings in his professional career.
Brad Goldberg replaced Fry and gave up a leadoff homer to Trey Mancini in the sixth. Later in the frame, Brenden Webb flew out to center field with Chance Sisco at third. Engel unloaded a strong one-hop throw to the plate, but Sisco slid around the tag for the run of distinction.
Frederick (1-1) received strong pitching from its three hurlers. Starter David Hess (1-0) worked around one of the aforementioned bases loaded jams in the first before settling in for five scoreless innings. He retired 14 of the final 15 batters he faced. Both Dennis Torres and Keller permitted one run in two innings out of the bullpen.
This four-game series continues Saturday afternoon at 2 from Maryland. Right-hander Robinson Leyer toes the rubber for the Dash, while Frederick counters with southpaw Luis Gonzalez. First pitch is set for 7 p.m., and pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn App.
The home slate begins on Thursday, April 16, for a jam-packed seven-game homestand at BB&T Ballpark. Select seats are still available, and fans can purchase them by calling (336) 714-2287 or visiting wsdash.com.
