DASH DOMINATE KEYS IN 2015 OPENER
The 2015 campaign began with a bang for the Dash on Thursday night. Winston-Salem scored in five different innings, and three pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout in the club's 13-0 victory at NYMEO Field at Harry Grove Stadium. All nine starters scored at least once, and five men notched multi-RBI showings. Both Adam Engel and Chris Jacobs plated three runs. Starter James Dykstra surrendered one hit over six sensational innings. Sean Hagan (1.0 IP) and Michael Ynoa completed the shutout.
MORE ON THE SHUTOUT
In his second consecutive Opening Day start, Dykstra needed just 66 pitches to roll through six innings. He faced one more than the minimum, and the lone Frederick hit against him--a leadoff single by Brenden Webb in the third--grazed off the glove of Dash shortstop Cleuluis Rondon. Dykstra started the lid-lifter for Low-A Kan napolis in 2014. Frederick's two hits represented the lowest total for a Dash opponent since July 20, 2014, when Tony Bucciferro posted a one-hit shutout, also at Frederick. On that night, Bucciferro took a no-hitter into the ninth inning.
OFFENSIVE ONSLAUGHT
Winston-Salem's 13-run margin of victory is one tally shy of a Dash-era record. The Dash have recorded a pair of 14-run wins--14-0 victories on August 25, 2011, at Salem, and April 25, 2012, at home against Potomac. The Dash had not scored more runs since April 27 of last season, when the club blasted Salem 15-9. Winston's seven-run seventh was also one shy of a modern era record. The squad has notched 10 innings of eight runs since 2009.
A FEW MORE RECORDS
Winston coaxed 11 walks, which is the team's highest total in the Dash era. The previous high-water mark was 10 (July 15, 2013, at Myrtle Beach). The Dash swiped seven bases, which matches a Dash record. Winston also stole seven bags on August 24, 2012 vs. Myrtle Beach.
ALMOST THE BEST
Through one game, Winston-Salem enjoys a share of the best scoring margin in all of Minor League Baseball. Both the Dash and the Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A Charlotte) recorded 13-0 wins, with the latter of the two obliterating Louisville. Only Akron (Double-A, Cleveland) scored more runs on Opening Night. The RubberDucks cruised past Binghamton 14-5. No Major League team has reached 13 runs in a single game thus far this season.
A HAPPY OPENING DAY
For the first time since 2010, Winston-Salem claimed a victory in the season's lid-lifter. In the Dash era (2009-present), Winston had only been 1-5 on Opening Day before Thursday's rout. Still, in the last 12 years, Winston-Salem has dropped nine openers.
PLENTY OF FAMILIAR FACES
The Dash boast a pair of Winston-Salem natives to start the season. Outfielder CJ Beatty and infielder Chris Jacobs grew up in the Triad and played together at Glenn High School. In addition to those familiar faces, the Dash have some experience on their side; of the 25 active members of the roster, all but seven had played with Winston-Salem before this season.
DASH DOTS
The Dash registered only six shutout wins a year ago...Since 2012, Winston-Salem is 20-9 (.690) in Frederick...The Dash have exploited the hitter-friendly nature of NYMEO Field at Harry Grove Stadium...Winston-Salem has averaged 6.3 runs per contest in Maryland, and Thursday marked the fifth double-digit run output during this span...Both Friday starters were highly-touted 2014 draftees who are making their High-A debuts...Dash southpaw Jace Fry has never thrown more than two innings in his professional career (seven appearances in rookie-level Great Falls in 2014)...Frederick's David Hess made 10 outings a year ago, and his career-long showing was five frames for short-season Aberdeen.
BOUNCING BACK FROM TOMMY JOHN
Fry starred in his freshman year at Oregon State University. He was a freshman All-American after posting a 5-3 record and a 2.45 earned run average in his first season in Corvallis. However, he left his final start of that 2012 season (June 1 vs. Belmont in an NCAA Tournament Regional game) with elbow pain, and he had Tommy John surgery two months later. This procedure limited Fry to just 7.2 innings during his sophomore season, but he stormed back to the top of the Beavers' rotation in 2014. Fry became an All-American thanks to his 11-2 mark and his 1.80 earned run average.
THE RUN IN WILLIAMSPORT
As mentioned above, Fry was a member of the 2006 Beaverton, Ore., squad that reached the United States' championship game in the Little League World Series. Fry earned the start in the title tilt, but Columbus, Ga., emerged with a 7-3 victory. That Columbus team went on to win the LLWS title with a 2-1 win over Asia, the World's representative. Fry and his teammates were supposed to play Mexico in the third-place game, but rain ultimately forced a cancellation, and both teams shared third place.
