Frederick Keys News Release
FREDERICK, Md. -The Keys bullpen would bend, but not break, as Jon Keller worked around a bases loaded jam in the ninth to lead Frederick to a 3-2 win on Friday night at Nymeo Field. In the game, the two sides went a combined 0-for-18 with runners in scoring position, but the Keys got just enough offense to hang on for the one-run win.
The Keys cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the first, following two singles and a Dash error. Josh Hart led off the frame with a base knock up the middle, while Hart and Jeff Kemp would grab two bases on a single and an error by Trey Michalczewski. Two batters later, Hart would come home on a wild pitch by Dash starter Jace Fry.
Ahead 1-0, the Keys would add to their total in the bottom of the six inning. On the first pitch from Dash reliever Brad Goldberg, Trey Mancini homered over the leftfield wall. The very next batter, Chance Sisco, followed with a walk and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Adrian Marin. With Brenden Webb up to bat, Sisco stole third base giving Webb an opportunity with one out to bring in the runner. Webb hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Sisco thanks to a good slide.
The Dash would not go quietly as they would score a run off Keys reliever Dennis Torres in the seventh inning closing the gap to 3-1. Chris Jacobs led off with a walk, Omar Narvaez followed with a single, and Cleuluis Rodon walked to load up the bases setting up a golden opportunity to get back in the game. However, after a Keenyn Walker strikeout, Adam Engel grounded into a fielder's choice scoring Jacobs to make it a 3-1 score.
In the bottom of the ninth, Winston-Salem made things interesting scoring a run to make it 3-2, but would squander another bases loaded opportunity. Narvaez led off the inning with a single off Keys' reliever Jon Keller. That was followed by back-to-back walks to Rondon and Walker to load the bases. After Engel struck out, Jake Peter grounded out to third scoring Narvaez. In the game, the Dash had the bases loaded three times, but managed to score only twice.
Frederick's starter, David Hess (1-0) was terrific in his Advanced-A debut. After a 25-pitch first inning, where six members of the Dash came up, the righty saw only one over the minimum the rest of the way. Over five shutout innings, Hess walked three and struck out three. Torres pitched two innings of relief allowing a run on three hits, striking out two while giving up two walks. Jon Keller allowed a run on two hits in his two innings of work, striking out two while walking two to earn the save.
Fry (0-1) suffered the loss despite a solid performance. Over five innings, he allowed only one unearned marker on four hits to go along with a walk and five strikeouts. Brad Goldberg pitched two-thirds of an inning allowing two runs on two hits while walking two. Andres Wheeler pitched two and a third innings allowing a hit while striking out two.
The victory brought the Keys record to 1-1 and Winston-Salem to 1-1.
