Game #87 (Home Game #44)
DOWN EAST TOPPLES DASH 7-1
John Parke spun a quality start in his BB&T Ballpark debut, but the Wood Ducks used a six-run eighth to beat the Dash 7-1 on Saturday night. The Dash left-hander went six innings, allowing one run on four hits, striking out three and walking three in a no-decision. With the game tied at one in the top of the eight and runners on second and third and two outs, Brendon Davis came in to score on a wild pitch to give Down East a 2-1 lead. Then, Ricky Valencia stroked an RBI single into right field make it a 3-1 game. Eric Jenkins kept the line moving, lining an RBI single down the right-field line to plate another Down East run. Josh Altmann capped the Wood Ducks barrage with a three-run homer to left field.
DUCK HUNTER
Forbes, who played with the Wood Ducks in 2017, has shined against his former team this year. In 14 games against Down East, the 21-year-old is batting .315 (17-for-54) with three homers, a double, a triple and 12 RBIs. During this current homestand, Forbes is 8-for-16 against the Woodies. Forbes was traded from the Rangers to the White Sox on August 31, 2017, in exchange for right-hander Miguel Gonzalez.
NUMBERS NEVER LIE
Thanks to their strong second-half start, Dash are atop the Carolina League in several offensive categories, including runs (439), hits (784), RBIs (413) and slugging percentage (.425). Here's a look at some of the hottest performers for Winston-Salem in the second half:
OF Micker Adolfo: .340 AVG (17-for-50) with four homers and 14 RBIs
INF Laz Rivera: .313 AVG (20-for-64) with 16 runs, seven doubles, three homers and nine RBIs
OF Blake Rutherford: .333 AVG (16-for-48) with three doubles, two homers and 12 RBIs (played on Friday and Saturday after leaving Wednesday's game with a left knee injury)
INF Gavin Sheets: .382 AVG (26-for-68) with two homers and 10 RBIs; carried a 15-game hitting streak (snapped on Monday)
LOCKED IN LUIS
Since earning a promotion from Low-A Kannapolis to begin the second half of the season, outfielder Luis Gonzalez has been on a tear. The former third-round pick out of the University of New Mexico is batting .339 (20-for-59) with 11 runs scored, eight doubles, a homer and eight RBIs. Gonzalez has recorded seven multi-hit games in his 13 games with Winston-Salem, including a career-best 4-for-5 performance on June 30 at Wilmington.
LOOKING STRONG IN THE SECOND HALF
At 11-5, Winston-Salem is off to its best second-half start in the Dash era (2009-present). During this stretch, Winston-Salem has outscored its opponents 103-70. The Dash have posted four double-digit scoring efforts over their first 16 games in the second-half, including a franchise-best 19 runs on June 25 at Nymeo Field against the Frederick Keys.
TRYING TO BE A NAME TO REMEMBER
Right-hander Luis Martinez will make his 13th start of the season on Sunday against the Down East Wood Ducks. Over his last three official starts, Martinez is 2-0 with a 3.94 ERA. The 23-year-old pitched on July 3 against the Wilmington Blue Rocks, allowing four runs in four innings, but the game was suspended in the top of the fifth inning, therefore it is not yet counted towards official stats. Martinez, who was signed by the White Sox in 2011 out of Venezuela, is in his second go-around with Winston-Salem. Martinez was 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in five outings with the Dash last year.
