THE FINAL ACT OF 2021
For the final series of the 2021 season the Winston-Salem Dash do battle with the Asheville Tourists for the third time this year.
Winston-Salem has played two close sets with Asheville this year, dropping four of six to the Tourists at McCormick Field from June 22-27 before splitting a six-game series from August 3-8. Asheville has been propelled by their offense this season, ranking first in batting average (.260), second in slugging percentage (.468) and third in homers (183).
From a pitching standpoint, the Tourists have had trouble keeping the ball in the park, allowing the second-most homeruns in the league behind the Greensboro Grasshoppers. With the Dash wielding two sluggers with 20 or more homers (Luis Curbelo, Alex Destino), Winston-Salem will look to induce long ball against Asheville to get the offense going. With a win in five of six games, the Dash would take the season series from the Tourists, marking the second team the Dash would conquer in a season series (Hickory, 12-11) in 2021.
TAMAREZ TOES THE RUBBER FOR ASHEVILLE
After receiving a promotion from Low-A Fayetteville on August 10, righty Misael Tamarez brought his fastball and changeup combo to High-A Asheville. Graded as near-plus pitches by Fangraphs, the fastball and change are the bread-and-butter pitches for the right-hander, harnessing his command to try and baffle hitters. A native of San Padro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, Tamarez has fanned 34 batters in 25.2 innings with Asheville this season, racking up another 64 punchouts in 43 innings with Low-A Fayetteville.
The second-youngest player on the Tourists, Tamarez has been a welcome addition to the Asheville rotation, walking just five batters in his 25.2 innings, shaping and sharpening his command with his second team of 2021.
SEEING 20-20
With a solo homerun by Alex Destino in last Friday's contest, both Destino and Luis Curbelo have logged 20 or more homers in the pinstripes this season. Curbelo and Destino become the second pair of teammates to sock 20 or more homers in a season, joining Ian Gac and Andy Wilkins - who mashed 33 and 23 homeruns, respectively - in 2011.
The Dash have amassed five other 20 homer seasons in their history, with Destino and Curbelo becoming the sixth and seventh sluggers to reach the 20 homer threshold in a single campaign.
A LOOK AHEAD...WAY AHEAD
With the 2021 season winding down, the Winston-Salem Dash announced their schedule for the 2022 season. While the six-game sets are back for another season, the Dash will open the 2022 campaign with a three-game series against the Hickory Crawdads on April 8. After the Crawdads visit Truist Stadium, the Dash renew their intrastate rivalry with the Greensboro Grasshoppers in the Camel City, marking the first of four series between the now-familiar foes.
The final four series of the year will all be held in the state of North Carolina, with road trips to Hickory and Greensboro on the docket as well as home series against the Asheville Tourists and Brooklyn Cyclones. Winston-Salem will play the Cyclones (Mets) and Aberdeen IronBirds (Orioles) for the first time in franchise history in 2022.
A PREVIEW OF TOMORROW
Winston-Salem entrusts righty Kaleb Roper with the early start Wednesday. Roper has posted impressive strikeout numbers for the Dash this year, fanning 79 batters in 57.2 innings.
Asheville sends Julio Robaina to the mound Wednesday. Promoted from Low-A Fayetteville on August 10, Robaina is making his fifth start for the Tourists, fanning 36 in 27.1 innings.
Wednesday's game is Education Day, with first pitch slated for 11 a.m., marking the earliest game of the season for the Dash. It marks the only home game to be played before noon during the 2021 campaign.
