Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release


Tonight's game opens a six-game series between the two teams and serves as the final six contests of the 2021 regular season.

Sunday... The Bowling Green offense exploded for nine runs on 13 hits in Winston-Salem on Sunday. Osleivis Basabe and Grant Witherspoon led the offensive charge, both collecting multiple hits and a home run. Basabe hit his first bomb in a Hot Rods uniform, while Witherspoon tied Evan Edwards for the team lead at 22. John Doxakis tossed his way to his sixth win for Bowling Green, improving the Hot Rods to 79-35 on the season.

Clinched... After an early Greensboro loss on Sunday, Bowling Green locked up home-field advantage for the High-A East Championship. The Hot Rods had originally clinched their postseason berth on Thursday with a win in game one of the doubleheader. Bowling Green has their final homestand this week before playoffs start on September 21st.

21 and Over... Grant Witherspoon's homer on Sunday tied Evan Edwards for the team lead at 22. Both Edwards and Witherspoon are tied for the single-season franchise record, sharing a spot with Derek Dietrich who hit 22 back in 2011. Jordan Qsar crushed his 21st long ball of the season on Friday, keeping the home run race close.

On the Road... Sunday marked the final game for Bowling Green's road schedule in the 2021 regular season. BG finished the season 38-22 away from home, batted .263 with 101 homers. The pitching posted a 4.38 ERA through 60 games with 547 strikeouts to 167 walks over 508.0 innings of work. Jordan Qsar played the most road games on the team (51) but Hill Alexander led the team in road batting average for players of 20+ games with a .378 BA. Qsar has led the team with 14 road homers and 43 RBIs while Grant Witherspoon led the team with 38 runs scored. Carlos Garcia and John Doxakis tied Jayden Murray with four road wins for the pitching staff while Chris Gau appeared in 16 games with a 2.38 ERA, the lowest on the team. Jacob Lopez and Zack Trageton each led the way with 44 strikeouts.

Sunday's Notes... Witherspoon has a six-game hit streak... Wisely has a three-game streak... He logged his second-straight multi-hit game of the year... It was also his seventh multi-hit game and seventh multi-RBI game with Bowling Green... Three of those games are three-RBI efforts... Alvarez had his sixth multi-hit game of the season... It was also his second two-RBI game... Infante had his first multi-hit game of the year with BG in his debut... Basabe's first hit with BG was a homer... Doxakis tied his career-high in innings pitched... Witherspoon tied Derek Dietrich (2011) and Evan Edwards (2021) for the Hot Rods single-season home run record... BG finishes their road schedule 38-22 this season... They hit 101 homers away from Bowling Green this season and scored 381 runs... The pitching staff had a 4.38 ERA on the road this season with 547 strikeouts over 508.0 innings... BG finishes their season-series against Winston-Salem 10-2, including a series win this week... BG is 15-2-2 in series this season...

Now Pitching: Evan McKendry... The Hot Rods pitcher has had an odd season against right-handed hitting. He has excelled at getting the strikeout, taking care of the righties at a clip of 10.9 K/9. At the same time, right-handed swingers have posted a 21.1% home run to fly ball ratio against McKendry. His overall ERA against righties is a 5.61, while he has held it to 2.60 against lefties. Southpaws strike out much less against McKendry (6.5 K/9), but also hit fewer long balls with a home runs to fly ball percentage of 11.8.
