WOODIES BATS EXPLODE IN 10-6 WIN

Alex Call smacked a three-run homer in the ninth, but the Dash could not overcome a dominant offensive night from the Wood Ducks, dropping Friday night's contest 10-6 contest at BB&T Ballpark. Down East raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning against Dash starter Dylan Cease, who had entered the game as the reigning CL Pitcher of the Week. Despite getting a run back in the bottom of the first, the Wood Ducks would chase Cease after he gave up three runs in the second and a run in the third. Walker Weickel picked up the win for the Wood Ducks, tossing six strong innings and allowing just one run.

THE MAN TO CALL

After getting off to a 2-for-22 start to the season, Call has established himself as one of the more consistent hitters in the Dash lineup. The former Ball State star has registered a hit in eight of his last nine games, posting a .313 average with three home runs and 11 RBIs during that stretch. Call, who was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year in 2016, is slashing an impressive .253/.370/.434 batting line with four homers and 16 RBIs in 27 games played this season. Defensively, he is the only regular to have not committed an error. The former third-round pick is in his second go-around with Winston-Salem after starting the 2017 campaign with the team. The 23-year-old played in 10 games, hitting only .244 before being sidelined with an intercostal strain.

MAY IS STILL OUR MONTH

Despite back-to-back losses, the Dash are still off to a blistering start in the month of May, posting an 8-3 mark over their first 11 games of the month. This marks the best start to the month in the Dash era (2009-present). The last time the Dash posted a winning record through the first 11 games of the month of May was 2011, when the ballclub went 6-5. Winston-Salem also started out 7-4 in May of 2010. One of the biggest reasons for the Dash's success this month has been their offense. Through the first 11 games of the month, Winston is averaging 6.8 runs per game.

WE CAN SWING IT

Following back-to-back five-hit efforts at the end of April, the offense has re-established themselves as one of the best in the 10-team circuit with solid performances to begin the month of May. Winston sits atop the Carolina League in several offensive categories, including slugging percentage (.443) and doubles (84). Meanwhile, the team is second in the league in runs scored (188), batting average (.282) and hits (336), and third in homers (29).

HELLO, DOWN EAST

The Wood Ducks are visiting BB&T Ballpark for the first time this season. Winston-Salem and Down East squared off at Grainger Stadium in Kinston, N.C., in a three-game series during the third week of the season, with the Woodies winning two of the three contests. However, the Dash smacked 18 hits in their lone victory, pummeling the Wood Ducks 14-4. The Dash and the Woodies will face each other a total of 26 times throughout the season, the most of any team in the circuit.

THIRD IN A ROW FOR MARTINEZ?

Dash right-hander Luis Martinez looks for his third consecutive victory on Saturday, as he gets the ball in game three of Winston-Salem's four-game set against Down East. Martinez picked up his first High-A victory on May 2 against Lynchburg, tossing five innings and allowing two runs in front of a crowd of 7,281. The Venezuelan native followed that up by securing a win at Salem, going five innings again and allowing two runs, although none were earned in that game. The right-hander has gone at least five innings in each of his first three starts, after beginning the season in the bullpen. More information is available on page 3.

DASH DOTS

The Dash are looking to avoid dropping three straight home games for the first time since August 13-15, 2017...Blake Hickman tossed two perfect innings on Friday, lowering his ERA to 2.76...Kyle Kubat tied a career-high with four innings pitched after relieving Cease in the third inning.
